Hmmmm. The X850XT will run it faster but the 7600 GT supports HDR.

Do you prefer HDR or faster gameplay? In benchs here on Anandtech of mid-range cards my X800XL beat a 7800GT. Of course this was without HDR, as my X800XL cannot do HDR.

Just trying to figure it out for a friedn looking to upgrade his 2nd rig for his kid to play Oblivion?

He has

A64 754 3000+
PCI-E 6600 256MB....

want to get a video card to get the kid going for 1 more year before he give his to his kid next year. I guess it will comes to which is a better card.....I do nto think HDR will be the major issue....he just want to fast card to last his kid longer and both card cost the same here

Oblivion then well obvious x850XT, anything other then that it is a close tie with 7600GT usually about 2-3% faster in games. I currently have a 7600GT and a x850pro, I think they are both equal to performance so get whatever is cheaper unless of course oblivion is a major factor.

I picked up a x850xt (160 at the egg) to replace my x700 pro which got fried by Oblivion. It only needs 300W of power which is key since my Dell PS is only 350W I think. Good price too.

Oblivion tends to favor ATI hardware. I'd go with the X850XT. The 7600GT may support some of the newer high quality effects, but it really isn't fast enough to use said features without a considerable drop in performance. This is the mid range, after all.
