X850XT for 299$ should I jump on this?

Hi everyone,

I'm getting a discount on the x850xt AGP through ATi, I can get one for 299$ shipped but the offer is good for April only... I have a 9800pro in my system right now; I was wondering if i'll be doing the right thing by getting one of these; my main concern is how all the new A64 motherboards that are worth anything are PCI-E and if I get this card now it will be useless if i upgrade to an A64 system.

My system is as follows:

ASUS A7N8X Deluxe
2800+ Barton
1GB Geil PC 3200
9800Pro
160Gb Seagate SATA

Givin my system specs.. should i expect a major improvement in games? would my cpu be a bottleneck?

Any help/suggestions is well appreciated 🙂

X850XT for $299? :Q I'd say go for it!

Your CPU will be a bottleneck somewhat, but you'll still see much improvement from your 9800 Pro. And even if you do want to upgrade to an A64 system with PCI-E a few months from now or something - that's such a discount that you'll almost certainly be able to sell it with no loss at all.

Consider that:

1) Barton core XPs are still pretty strong runners as far as CPUs go
2) There are plenty of good Socket 939 AGP motherboards available
3) There are plenty of good Socket 754 AGP motherboards available
4) PCI-E offers no advantage over AGP, other than SLI capability for Nvidia cards
5) You can buy a Radeon X850 XT for the same price as a Radeon X800XL

There is no reason to not get a fantastic card and improve your framerates significantly while playing FarCry, Doom 3, and Half Life 2.

The only reasons to skip buying the card:
1) You'd rather not spend $299 right now
2) You don't play FarCry, Doom 3, or HL2 and none of the games you do play need the extra horsepower.

Nothing coming down the pike CPU wise will be blowing away current A64s for a few years. Dual CPUs will be the future trend, but they will be better for multi tasking moreso than for gaming. You'd get a full life cycle from a good AGP card before you'd have to upgrade to a PCIe platform. There are plenty of very nice MBs that support 754 and 939 with AGP slots, in fact, the 754s offer the best cost to performance ratio right now as a higher Mhz A64 will out perform it A64 counterpart in most games.

However, I'm not saying go out and grab that card. We are right at the beginning of the next generation's life cycle, which means waiting a few months will likely mean $300 mid range cards with much more power or current generation high end cards or equivalents for half the price. Plus you may well want to go PCIe because future cards will support the platform meaning they should be cheaper as PCIe while the future venice cpus should still be supported by the 939 platform, meaning you may well be able to keep a good MB for a few years through a couple of complete upgrades.

He won't be able to get two unless he can get another employee to do it for him.

But seriously, holy mackeral that is a great price!

I would honestly buy & sell it, & then use the money made toward a new A64 939 PCI-e system with an X800XL 🙂

Selling it did cross my mind. The AGP cards are going for about 550USD right now. Do they charge listing fees on ebay or do they keep a % of the sale?

Both lol

I have an A8V Deluxe AGP 939 (3500+) MB w/9800Pro and it has been running almost non-stop since November, No problems whatsoever

Your CPU is almost certain to hold you back, in most modern games, the Barton sucks compared to the AMD64 (but is just about competetive with Pentium 4's).
But as others have said, AGP isn't dead yet, or you can sell if tor a tidy profit, and buy something like an X800XL + cash to spare.

I was thinking about selling here... but i have no history selling on these forums; If i do list it on here what are the chances of someone buying it and what kinda price should i expect?

On the FS/FT forum here, people would probably want you to ship first if they have high heatware (check the link in my sig to see what heatware is). Some people have like a thousand positive evaluations, all positive. You could probably ask for like a small "good faith" deposit from the buyer.

I know it seems crazy to ship your card before you get your money, but it's how the established traders protect themselves on the forum.

Good luck, I would buy it from you in a heartbeat if I could afford it.
