Okay, I'm using an ATi X850XT with Catalyst 5.13 on a 2.6ghz p4, 1GB 2700 RAM, 420w Aspire PSU. I just ran 3dmark05 and got 4791... now isn't that a little too low?

no. thats perfect, mainly because you have a 2.6ghz P4, and the biggest performance killer, PC2700 Ram.

Now that is a hard hit... so I go from a supposed 7000 (with benches) to a lowly 4700 :(.

At least I can play DODS in 1600x1200 now.

Make sure your 3dmark05 did not also run CPU tests. A haircut from ~6200 3dmarks to 4700 is a bit too extreme even for a memory hungry CPU like the P4 paired with PC2700. 3dmark is not THAT cpu sensitive.

If you disable the CPU tests, expect at least a mid to upper 5k 3dmark, unless something else is wrong -- heat or power throttling. Make sure you got fast writes off in the BIOS, and a 128M AGP apperture.

Okay, I did it on all default settings, with just the 3 video tests. I got a score of 4775. I'll turn off fast writes and use 128M AGP now, if it's not that I think it might be the cheap power supply I'm using... I might try using my older 300w PSU which was more reliable.

Turned off Fast Writes, AGP Write, and PCI Write... got 4772. I'm beginning to think it's the power supply.

EDIT: How do I change the aperature?

You change the aperature in the Bios.

You might also want to make sure that you hav turned off all unnessecary programs too like your anti-virus, Zone alarm, MBM5, etc. before you run the benchmark.

Go to your display control panel, and under 3d settings reset everything to default.

Just as a reference for comparison the X850XT on THG VGA listing in 3DMark 2005 v1.1 recieved:

1024x768 No AA/AF = 6098
1024x768 4X AA/8X AF = 5050
1600x1200 4X AA/8X AF = 3367

Using the following setup:
CPU AMD Athlon64 4000+
FSB 200MHz
Motherboard MSI K8N Neo2 (nForce 3 Ultra)
Memory 2x Corsair CMX-512-3200C2, 1024MB
HDD Seagate Barracuda 7200.7 120GB S-ATA (8MB)
DVD Hitachi GD-7000
LAN Netgear FA-312
Power Supply Antec True Control 550W (ATX 1.0)
Drivers & Configuration
Graphics ATI Catalyst v5.06
NVIDIA v71.98
Chipset NVIDIA nForce4 Standalone v6.53
OS Windows XP Prof. SP1a
DirectX DirectX 9.0c

Then download and install Ati Tray Tools. It's a small program, and it has a lot of tweaks and settings, including all the ones available in the control panel. It might not help anyways if the P4 is bottlenecking, but it's worth a try.

Yeah, definitely run the bench after turning off Zonealarm. When I run benches, I found that if Zonealarm is running also, it lowers my scores by about 10% or so.

something is WRONG . . . your cpu doesn't make that much difference . . .mine at 2.8Ghz is only a bit lower than at 3.3

what Cats are you using? EDIT: the CCC that goes with Cat 5.13 is messed up

my x850xt does 6100 stock and 6537 o/c'd to PE levels

disable all your running programs including antivirus and make sure nothing is "forced"

5.13 catalysts helped out with my score...my setup

3100+ sempron "paris" (2.069ghz)
2 x 512 mb Pqi value ram @ 230mhz 3-3-3-8
x850xt AGP stock

6140 points on 3dmark05

at default low res low quality, 3DMark05 score is still sensitive to CPU, i.e., somehow highly CPU limited
as your increase the res/quality level, the scores of the same X850XT with different CPUs will converge

you here only got about 70% of your "target score" (from THG maybe). try 1600x1200 with aa/af turned, you should get something around 90%.

My bad...my card is really Pro version not XT so I assume the 5575 is the average score for X850 Pro?

Turning off the fast write option gave me almost 15% more score in 3DMark05.
Isn't Fast Write supposed to improve AGP performance? So confused.
Is there any other benefit if I keep this option on?
