X850pro or New System

So I have two choices. Option 1 - buy a low price dell box for a 3rd party and get myself a X850pro AGP for my old system. (I have not had a 3d card in the system EVER so I'd be happy to play old games)

OR I can spend ~600-700 on a new system for myself and pass on the old AGP system to the 3rd party. That would have to have a 3d card and dont expect me to upgrade.

Idealy I'd find a minimum system with an AGP 7800GS in it and swap it out into my system but that does not exist.

The x850pro is a pretty good card for your situation. One of my friends with a socket 754 setup just got one and was quite please wtih it.

What are your system specs?

If you have peripherals such as monitor, keyboard, mouse, speakers, etc. I would definitely recommend a new $700 setup. I think the 939 parts are a great buy right now. But if you're starting from scratch, it might be tough to stay under $700.

You can actually build a pretty decent rig for $700 with a few rebates.

Just ordered: P-805D + mb + 2gb DDR2 ram ($40 rebate on ram) = $300

Last mid-tower I bought was $10 AR, Xfinity 500w psu = $20 AR, DVD/RW = $36 OTD, discontinued Compac kb = $10, Logitech 230s = $20 AR, optical scroll mouse = $10

Have recently seen lcd monitors for as little as $129 AR, factory refurb (full warr.) X850pro = $139.

Yea I have a lot of the stuff needed in a new setup which is why I am considering.

I'd beable to hold onto my Dell 2001FP, my THX logitech speakers, my microsoft wireless natural keyboard and mouse.

Currently I have a big ATX tower with a Antec True 430W PS.

Mobo: MSI with AGP
Ram: 1dimm of 512mb DDR400@2.5
CPU: P4 3Ghz @ (I think) 533FSB (I remember I have the old stlye P4 before the new socket came out for hyper threading)
Sound: audigy pci
Video: AGP

I am very unhapy with the dell monitor because it has a native resolution of 16x12 and does not scale well. It is the reason I gave up on games for so long.

Doesn't the 2001FP do 1:1 scaling? Or is that not cutting it?

I'm in the exact same situation (or almost) myself. I have a P4 clocked at 3.4Ghz & a gig (maybe 2 soon) of memory. Stuck with an old underclocked ATi 9700 from Dell. Haven't been able to play games much and wanted to beef up my system for some of the newer games and playing WoW at max settings. I didn't think it was a good idea to go and spend money on a new system with so much new tech and price cuts RIGHT around the corner. I know you can't always wait to upgrade because there is always something new coming out but considering this is a pretty huge product cycle for Intel and there are going to be drastatic price cuts coming, I opted for just picking up a video card to get me by for the next few months. On the plus side, when I do get a new system, this old machine won't be crippled.

I picked up an ATi X800 XT Pe for a couple hundred bucks canadian off someone here in the forums. You should also check out the Hot Deals forums as ATi is having a clearance on older AGP cards.

I have to say that NVidia and ATI are missing out on a huge market of AGP users still by not making any new cards.

problem is that the 7800gs is too expensive a part for a old agp system but they can't give agp users a lower price than pci ex systems as then all the pci ex people would know what their pci ex cards should cost. I think ati might be getting the idea as they could dump some agps on us and then then get us again with the vista upgrade cycle.

If you can , Wait until Crusoe before you decide.
The big price cuts from AMD and Intel coming on the 24th of July will probably allow you to get more for your money vs now.
If you don't want to wait, The X850 pro looks like a nice card.

my XFX 6800 died, and I've got a 754 system with an AGP slot, so I ordered an X850 Pro a week or so ago. It of course is backordered, but hopefully I'll get it in a couple of weeks. Until then, WoW is getting played on my 9700 pro, (and let me tell you something, 40 man instances run like crap on that unless I turn everything way down)
