X800XT AIW

Well I just installed my card and I don't see a performance difference, the one sim I play has the exact same fps and this is an upgrade from a 9800pro

Tom

Are you playing C&C Generals? That game has a built in fps limiter, so you won't see any difference. But try games like HL2 and Doom3, you'll see a pretty big difference.

That's an older game, and unless you're playing at 1600x1200 resolutions, both cards would slice through it like a knife through butter. To really see the difference, you need to run newer games that stress the 9800p, and allow the x800xt to really stretch it's legs.

That game is/was ahead of the hardware at the time, it was one of the first games to utilizes dual thread technology and even now it stresses a modern system, it doesn't go above 35fps often(w/o everything being cranked up) and it dips into the 20's every now and then on my system.

The main advantage the x800XT has over the 9800 Pro is it's ability to process shaders, especially DirectX 9 shaders. NASCAR 2003 doesn't use any DirectX 9 shaders, so it's performance advantage in that department is null. The x800XT does have quite a bit more memory bandwidth than a 9800 Pro though, which should allow you to run higher levels of anti-aliasing and anisotropic filtering and higher resolutions.

Also, simulations like that tend to be a bit more CPU/platform limited due to the physics that's being calculated. In single player mode, the CPU is also driving 20 other cars in addition to it's normal tasks of processing your input and the physics for your car and sending geometry data and whatnot to the video card.

Jeff,

I thought that my GPU was holding me back since my CPU is a 3.4ghz P4, as far as AA/AF I already had it cranked all the way up.

So in your opinion you think that is normal and I wont be getting much more performance until I upgrade my whole system?

Thanks,

Tom

Try the ATI driver cleaner, it's on their web sight. I had a problem going from a X800Pro, it somehow kept it at 12 pipes until I cleaned the drivers and reinstalled them.

I used diver clearner last night, how can I verify that all 16 pipes are working/unlocked?

I was going to say yes, but then I looked around and found a demo I had for NASCAR 2003 Season. Installed it and played it for a while and I averaged about 100 FPS in practice with just me racing, and about 80 FPS with a full field of AI drivers. That was at 1024x768 with 4XAA and 16XAF and all the in game settings at max.

What resolution are you using?

*EDIT* This is the same game you're playing right?

Yeah that's the game, I get 100fps when I'm all alone like you are in that pic.

I think the demo only has 20 ai in it and I run all 43. When the field get all spread out my fps are 50-60 but when starting out I'm at 35 and that's with 25showing in front and 5 in rear, when I crank it up to 42 in front and 42 in rear it drops to 20's.

Can you show me the graphics option page and I'll compare what I have turned on in comparison to you. What are your system specs?

Tom

Edit : I'm running @ 1280x1024 AA/AF maxed.

Edit : I'm running @ 1280x1024 AA/AF maxed.

A64 Venice @ 2.6 GHz
1GB RAM @ 187 MHz 2-3-3
6800GT @ 400/1050

Graphics Options

There's only 10 cars in the demo. I guess with a full field of 42 it would slow down quite a bit. That's probably your main problem. CPU's just can't handle that much yet. I bet a Pentium D or X2 would work quite well if the game is multi-threaded like you say. (and doesn't just carry the Intel HT stamp of approval for marketing purposes)

*EDIT* I ran it again at 1280x960 with all the same settings and got the exact same frame rates, so I'm guessing it's completely CPU limited.

I had to use 3DMark05, but all utilities said 16 pipes, but it was benching like a 12 pipe card. As soon as I cleaned and reinstalled my score went up from like 4700 to 5200. In hardware manager the description changed from like X800 series to X800 AIW. It's hard to explain what happened, but something was wrong.

You have a stout setup it would have been interesting to see how we compare on this sim. Looks like it boils down to a new system and not just GPU.

I'd have to agree. I think with dual and quad core processors you'll see these sims really take off. It's just too much for a single execution core to handle. On the upside, the newer versions of the game look better and have more features and performance is almost identical. 🙂

Didn't EA acquire Papyrus? So the newer versions would be... NASCAR Sim Racing, NASCAR 2005: Chase for the Cup and the upcoming NASCAR '06: Total Team Control.

EA bought the exclusive Nascar license and EA acquired Papyrus but most of the people who created NR2003 were let go, they created First-Racing and bought the "code" from EA. The relation between Nascar 2003 and Nascar 2006 is by name only, NR2006 is a game that you can master in a few hours and NR2003 is a sim that I am still learning after 2+ years.

Wow... I just looked on ebay and it's selling for $75+ for a used version, I bought 3 for $5 each just in case I scratched mine.

I got mine from Amazon and for a brief moment I thought I should buy 100 of them because I know that they will be worth something someday....

Instead I bought 50 Dale Earnrardt books.
