Well I just installed my card and I don't see a performance difference, the one sim I play has the exact same fps and this is an upgrade from a 9800pro

The main advantage the x800XT has over the 9800 Pro is it's ability to process shaders, especially DirectX 9 shaders. NASCAR 2003 doesn't use any DirectX 9 shaders, so it's performance advantage in that department is null. The x800XT does have quite a bit more memory bandwidth than a 9800 Pro though, which should allow you to run higher levels of anti-aliasing and anisotropic filtering and higher resolutions.
Also, simulations like that tend to be a bit more CPU/platform limited due to the physics that's being calculated. In single player mode, the CPU is also driving 20 other cars in addition to it's normal tasks of processing your input and the physics for your car and sending geometry data and whatnot to the video card.

Try the ATI driver cleaner, it's on their web sight. I had a problem going from a X800Pro, it somehow kept it at 12 pipes until I cleaned the drivers and reinstalled them.

Jeff,
I thought that my GPU was holding me back since my CPU is a 3.4ghz P4, as far as AA/AF I already had it cranked all the way up.
So in your opinion you think that is normal and I wont be getting much more performance until I upgrade my whole system?
Thanks,
Tom

I think the demo only has 20 ai in it and I run all 43. When the field get all spread out my fps are 50-60 but when starting out I'm at 35 and that's with 25showing in front and 5 in rear, when I crank it up to 42 in front and 42 in rear it drops to 20's.
Can you show me the graphics option page and I'll compare what I have turned on in comparison to you. What are your system specs?
Tom
Edit : I'm running @ 1280x1024 AA/AF maxed.

I used diver clearner last night, how can I verify that all 16 pipes are working/unlocked?

There's only 10 cars in the demo. I guess with a full field of 42 it would slow down quite a bit. That's probably your main problem. CPU's just can't handle that much yet. I bet a Pentium D or X2 would work quite well if the game is multi-threaded like you say.

You have a stout setup it would have been interesting to see how we compare on this sim. Looks like it boils down to a new system and not just GPU.

I'd have to agree. I think with dual and quad core processors you'll see these sims really take off. It's just too much for a single execution core to handle. On the upside, the newer versions of the game look better and have more features and performance is almost identical. 🙂

I'm assuming that by newer versions you mean the updates?

Didn't EA acquire Papyrus? So the newer versions would be... NASCAR Sim Racing, NASCAR 2005: Chase for the Cup and the upcoming NASCAR '06: Total Team Control.
