I'm sure this is a user error on my part in setting up the driver configurations, but when playing a game it freezes, then gives a really messed up view of the game (REALLY messed up). I have to reboot when this happens although my other progs are running fine (WinAmp) and when I come back into XP I check the display section in Control Panel. My refresah rate has been kicked to 43hz interlaced for some reason & I have to redo my rate & apply to correct the issue until it happens again.

Long story short:

Video freezes in game & goes bonkers
Forces reboot & upon return to XP I find my refresh rate is all fubared in XP
I believe it is an incorrect driver setting in my Catalyst causing the problem (like maybe interlacing setup improperly for my card on Control Center)

Thanks.

OK I reinstalled and it still tries to do it, only now I have found out that the driver is avoiding the freeze by doing a recovery on itself. It states that the card was not responding to the driver commands or something similar to that & that caused it to do a VPU recover. Any ideas?

BTW, I tried rolling back to 5.7 and it still does this. Could it be that the x800xl isn't getting enough juice from the PSU? I have an Antec 550w TP2.0 but the x800xl has no molex connector, so I'm running it off the single 12v rail.

Check the temp on your video card. Could be that your video card is overheating. The Antec 550w TP2.0 should be more than enough for your rig if you're not doing some crazy O/C'ing. Check the voltage on the 12v rail just to make sure your power supply is not going bad.

Any overclocks? Do you have the latest BIOS and chipset drivers installed for your system?

No overclocks, latest BIOS, haven't checked for a new chipset driver in over a month. Do the XL's have a pention for overheating? I have the Logisys Edge fan kit running straight over the card so it really shouldn't be overheating. I'm gonna get RivaTuner & play AoE3 demo for awhile to be sure though.

Might be PSU or maybe need to raise AGP voltage a bit. Check the +12v on your PSU.

Does the XL have temp display in the catalyst drivers? Or will he need ATI Tool or something to check temps?

I downloaded ATiTool and ran the artifact test on it for a little while & had no problems. The card topped out at 70 degrees, so I am not really sure what the problem is. The temp quickly dropped back down into the 40's after I stopped the test.

Formatted & installed a X850Xt and played Madden06 all day with no problems at all. Must've been a software issue or a power supply issue.
