I am looking to give my brother a gift.

he only plays WoW, but my dad gave him a 21" 1680x1050 monitor so his computer seems to be a little slow at that res playing World of warcraft. the x800 was ok at 1280x1024 for the most part.

Anyhow , I think it should be a worthwhile difference, going from an x800 128mb (12 pipes 400/700) to an x800xl 256mb (16 pipes 400/1000) , but do you guys think its worth it? he's not an insane player but he does say it chops up. I think the rest of his computer is ok (athlon 64 3000+ with 1gb ram) .

Apparently an x800xl is about $75 shipped on ebay and thats about all i want to spend. worthwhile? i'm hoping for a 50% or so framerate increase.

It will not be a 50% frame increase. The x800xl has 25% more pipes than the x800, and they're clocked the same, so theoretically you should get about a 25% increase in performace.

If you can find a used X850 XT that may do the trick, otherwise I'd recommend the X1950 Pro or GT.

i think im going to probably get it after doing a bit more research, it looks like ill get maybe a 40% increase which is decent enough.

and yeah my brother is like 24, but well... i figure he might as well play in style. i considered the x1950gt also, but he doesnt plan to upgrade his cpu for a year or something and i think it'd be wasted on just an athlon 64 3000

the x1950gt should not really be too hurt by the 3000. I think you should go or it. It will probably even have better IQ than the x800 series.

I'd also get the x1950gt instead. Not only is it faster than the x800xl to begin with, but it also might OC better. The x800xl and x800 don't have much OC headroom.

My x1950pro handles WoW like a champ at 1680x1050 x6 multisample and all settings maxed.
