x800xl vs 6800nu 16x1x6 oced to 390/830

I'd say that with the number specifications we are looking at in this particular example, given the seriousness of the situation - and that's not even mentioning the intricacies of the outer parameters (and we all remember how difficult those can get! scroll back a few days if you need a refresh - it's all right there), that we might be best off looking to the actual numbers - the raw data - in place of all other evidence; this is generally considered, by many, to be the most accurae way of dealing with decisions such as the one at hand.

How can you be so sure? I've never seen anyone bench a comparison between the two, and in fact I would say that an unlocked 6800NU would be equal to an X800XL. My reasoning? An X800XL is slightly slower than a 6800GT, and my old 6800NU that I had unlocked and overclocked a bit was also very slightly slower than a 6800GT (and virtually equal to it at lower resolutions of 10x7 and 12x10). An unlocked 6800NU would also cost $75 less....

thanks for the quick answers guys.. cept for that one weird one ...😛 i know there is benchmarks out ther.. but i have seen any of a nu unlocked and oced like mine..

I believe this too.
the X800XL is a very capable card, not saying the 6800NU isn't, but I think the X800XL is a better card for sure. Even vs the unlocked 6800NU.

ya im feeling the pain seeing as how i can pic up the xl at the local futureshop for 5 bucks more than what i paid for this.....

Unless you find a way to unlock another 128mb mem on that 6800 (LOL...), it will never be as good as a x800xl. Plus, you can OC an x800xl also, even if it's not by much, but it makes it that much harder to beat.

Memory doesnt matter as much as clock speeds, and pixels pipes, etc. Proof is the 256MB 6200s which perform just as bad (if not worse) than normal 6200s.

There were once 6800s with 256MB memory and clocked higher than the ultras.

Is 3DMark05 ran with High performance or quality settings? On high perf I got 5201 with the clocks in my sig (not even maxed out yet). Still 12 pipes and 256MB of memory because this is a PCI-E part. The highest 6800GT I've seen was 5600 (don't know the settings). With pipes unlocked on the AGP part you could get even more performance.

3dmarks were ran at stock with orginal nvidia driver.. so its set to quality by default.. i dont know how much of a diff/ more points i would get if i set to performance.. i score in thr 4700 range..can oc higher but see no point. also ur pro and ram spank mine

x800xl -> Proof

"Even if we were able to hit the speeds we achieved in our EVGA e-GeForce 6800 review (400MHz core/810MHz memory), it still wouldn?t have been enough to catch up to say, a GeForce 6800 GT. The GeForce 6800, even with all 16 pixel pipes and 6 vertex pipes running, still gives up too much memory bandwidth to the GeForce 6800 GT to be a 6800 GT killer. The 6800 board?s 128MB frame buffer would also be a huge impediment to catching up to a GT." - Firingsquad.

there oc wasnt very high in that review i get much higher stable ocs.. i choose to stay at 390/830 purely for longevity issues... the highest stable oc i getwith no aritfacts during stress testing is 420/890

Well I can sort of provide an answer to this question. I used to own a 6800nu OC'd to 430/920 and fully unlocked and now have a new x800xl. In 3dMark01 with the 6800nu overclocked it scored 25666 with my A64 at 2.65ghz and my new x800xl stock with my venice at 2.7ghz, it scored 26534 (I have not run it overclocked in 3dmark01 yet). A little unfair on cpu clocks, but pretty close between the two.

Now in 3dMark05, the same 6800nu scored 5064 and this time I OC'd my x800xl to 470/580 which in turn scored 5964. Still fairly close, but the added 128MB helps with 3dMark05 some I think. My 6800GT scored 6113 @ 465/1180 just for reference.

So in my experience with pretty decent overclocking card examples: 6800GT>x800xl>6800nu. Pretty much as it should be I suppose based on price.

Yeah, I did the bios volt mod to 1.3v if I remember right, but used stock cooling. The guy I sold the card to put different cooling on it and it did even better than I did. Something like 450/950 or so.

im using the zalman alcu vf700 and oc fine unlock with no problems.. the clocks i reach now are good but for games or whatever down the road if i need to oc more.. highest stable right now is.. 420/890 you think the volt mod will help if so where can i get it thanks.. also can it be reversed?

I can't remember the exact process since it was a while back when I did it, but you basically extract the bios using nvflash. Then use the free program nibitor to open up the bios and modify the 3d voltage to 1.3 or 1.4v. Can't remember which. You can also modify your boot clocks as well if you want. There should be a thread here someplace that illustrates the whole process. It can be reversed by flshing back to your stock bios.
