The fan on my msi 9800 pro died :( Right now I have an old old card so I can still use my computer. I've been trying to research video cards but it's very confusing as the addition of one letter seems to make a difference between a good and crappy card. I want an affordable (150-180) agp video card until I get a new computer with a pci express card. Here's what I've looked at:

Gecube Radeon x800xl $185

PNY Geforce 6800GS $180 (What does the "s" in GS stand for?

Sapphire radeon x800 gto $151 after rebate

Powercolor x800 gto 155 but out of stock

Any suggestions on these? I like to play FPS games but I'm a casual gamer.

I thought the x800xl is over 200? Is this not a good quality version? Also, how does it compare to the x800gto? What about the 6800gs - is this different than the reviews for the "6800gt" in articles on this forum? Thanks in advance for the help.

I did a little research and from the looks of the article:

xbit article

x800xl >6800gs > x800gto but performance difference doesn't appear that great. Any comments?

AGP, the 6800GS would be best, IMO, SM3.0, and unlockable quad of pipes > x800xl/gto.

I would definitely go with the X800XL. You'll get better performance and better drivers plus SM 3.0 isn't really a factor for cards in that speed bracket.

Thanks for the replies. I purchased PNY ram before, but I'm a little reluctant about buying a video card from this company. Anybody know if there are issues with their video card?

Well, my bro got a PNY 7800gt a few months back, and it turns out the secondary video output only has 1 or 2 of the 3 primary colors working - basically the whole secondary screen is tinted in magenta color. So, yeah, PNY still has issues.

My only issue has been a rebate that the processing company had been denying for various bogus reasons.

For unlocking, 6800GS. Otherwise, X800XL since it is the same as the two X800GTO in everything except having 4 more pipes.
