x800xl underperforming

I recently switched from a 6800gt to x800xl due to freezing issues with my dfi mobo(which have now been subsequently fixed).

however, imo the x800xl isn't performing where it should be at.

with 3400 newcaslte
dfi lanparty nf3
gig of corsair i am only getting 5k in 3d mark and my stress tests seem low, only 120fps at 1280x1024.

i have concerns because a friend of mine has a x800xl w/ his 3200 939 system with similar specs. he is getting 117fps WITH 4AA and 8AF in the stress test wereas I am only getting 93fps. I would think that my extra 400 mhz would make up for his 939 duel channel etc.

anyone have any ideas what is going on, or should i not expect any better?

5K in 3dmark is about right for an X800XL.

Not sure about the disparity in HL2...

Yeah, that sounds seriously wrong. Check my sig for my desktop rig. I'm getting a score of 5255 (although the I'm slightly overclocked on both GPU and CPU. My stock settings got me a score of 4500 even. I'm just running a 2600+ so I would think your processor should smoke mine.

im not sure if i got the old nvidia drivers completely cleaned out. i uninstalled them b4 installing th new card, but not sure how much that would affect performance. I was pondering just ot do a clean format..but im not too sure.

use drivercleaner to make certain you nuked the forcewares. Other things to look into include-

1. Making certain you both are using the same vid drivers

2. That your core&ram clocks are identical to your friend's.

3. That you aren't experiencing any clock throttling/heat issues

4. That something else isn't eating up CPU cycles on your system.

my 6800gt got 5k stock, x800xl's will score roughly the same

Memory bandwidth actually makes a big difference in some games (from my own testing). If you can, get your friend to turn off dual-channel, or just take out one of his dimms and see what sort of results he gets.

Make sure your memory speeds are comparable - like both running at 200mhz(400ddr), cas 2.5-4-4-10. And if whatever benchmark you're running uses a lot of video memory (more than 256), then AGP acupecture will come into play. Make sure it is set to the same on both systems. Usually 128mb is optimal, but up or down either way can make a big difference depending on the game and settings.

Be sure to check and turn off background tasks and services. If they're using up a lot of memory or are accessing the hard drive during the benchmark, they can slow you down quite a bit.

5k is normal for an x800xl, so I don't think there's anything wrong with your video drivers, but it's always a possibility.
