X800XL temperatures?

Got my new MSI X800XL the other day after selling my Chaintech 6600GT. Love the card minus the loud ass cooler (soon VF700-AlCu YAH!!). However i'm worried about the temps.

I'm using ATi Tool 0.24 Beta 9 to view the temps.

Sitting here at the desktop I'm getting 54C as "GPU" Temp, and 43C as "GPU Environment temp. Seems normal to me i guess, what worries me is under 3d load such as the "Scan for Artifacts" feature, the cards temp reads up to 108C as "GPU" and 50C for the other. As soon as I close the 3d screen, the temps drop instantly down to ~75C.

Is this normal? Maybe a bug with ATi Tool reading so high? I was expecting 70's-80's for this card but not >100C. There's no artifacts though even at that high temp, ATi Tool didn't report any.

As far as i can tell the Cooler is on properly, i even took it off and reseated it, no difference. One side of the cooler does seem higher so maybe a bad design, but as far as i can tell, it's making good contact with the termal and chip.

Please tell me i worry too much.

ati tray tool is much better for reading temps. ati tool has some bugs with the x800xl temp monitors for some.

Hey, thanks i just tried ATi Tray Tool, nice little program... however, still same thing, temps reach a max of 110C and then drop to below 70C within 2-3 seconds of stopping the 3d.

does anyone else have this happening?

That seems high, but I'd think it's more likely to just be reading too high than to actually be that hot.

Easy test: does the heatsink feel blisteringly hot when it's under load? If it's really around 100C, you'd barely be able to touch it. Even 70C is uncomfortably warm to the touch, but you can keep your finger on it for a few seconds with no ill effects.

100c means throttling ro very close to it.

try remounting it first, if that dosent work, try:

take the hs/f off
clean off the thermal material with 90% isopropyl alcohol.(many of them have an excess that causes poor heat transfer.)
put on a thin coat of ceramique.
remount.

Could be a read temp bug. I wouldn't bother unless it was causing artifacts. But that's just me.

hmmm

Yah i'm getting no Artifacts according to ATI Tools "scan for artifacts" feature as well as can't see any during game play, etc...

I already have tried remount , but i will try again this time cleaning the thermal off and applying ceramique.

I just want to play some CS:S for few more days until my Zalman VF700-AlCu comes in. Don't want to worry about the card frying itself.

Weeeeee I fixed it.

I reseated the heatsink. Previously i reinstalled it and tighted the screws all the way, this would leave the heatsink still in contact with the gpu but it looked lopsided. This time around i untightened one side, and made the heatsink as level as i could without tightening the screws ll the way. Temps now idle at ~45C and peak at ~72C..

Btw, is 110C hot enough to damage the card? I'm a little worried, maybe i should RMA and say it was overheating! (which it was in my books).

Well, when you installed the Zalman cooler you voided your warranty. Sadly you aren't truly qualified to RMA that card anymore. Regarding whether or not 110C was enough to hurt the card, maybe. But if the card is fine now I'd say just leave well enough alone and play some games. It sounds like it wasn't running at that temp. long enough to burn it up, IMO you'd know already if you'd damaged it.
