x800xl Questions

Any good tips or tricks for this card?

1. Is there any monitoring software available?
2. What kind of overclocks are people getting and how?
3. This is the cooler to get supposedly, but where to find it? Will the 4 work or does one need the 5?

1: ATI Tool has been the only prog. that I can see my temps with so far (powercolor)

2: I'm running 475/580 stable, but first had to do the pencil voltmod look here, but read the x800 mod first to get an idea of how to do the x800xl
Before the mod I could hit max 435/540 stable.

3: I'm using the Zalman VF700CU, getting decent temps and no noise. I like AC's coolers, but with my passive northbridge heatsink installed right behind the card, the AC would blow hot air from it onto my card.

I am really enjoying this card, and I'm coming from a 6600gt.

cheers,

The PCIe one is good. Not the AGP. The AGP one has 8 pipelines. The PCIe one has 16. Both with the same clock speeds.

The X800Pro is available in both PCI-E and AGP, and the X800XL is PCI-E only.

The X800Pro has 12 pixel pipelines, compared to the X800XL's 16 pipelines.

1) Not, that I know of...

2)I tried overclocking with ATI, my system instantly crashed the second I tried to find my highest clockspeed. Somethings messed...

3)If the base was perfect, it'd be the cooler to get. The only problem is, that the base isn't perfectly even. You're going to spend some time with a nail file and make sure everything connects.

What manufacturer's is everyone running? I'm debating between the MSI X800 XL and the plain ol' ATI model (price difference is about $60). Anyone running the ASUS or other variants that are still in the $400+ range?

The ATI version is a better value (I think), but the other variants may have more features (i.e. dual DVI, ViVo, different cooler). If you need those features, pay more, if you don't, don't.

i think that is a typo. I sincerly doubt ATI would release an X800xl AGP with 8 pipelines. Then again I could be wrong. The reason I say this, is because I've looked up prices online for the x800xl agp, and it is expected to sell around 340 dollars. Would you buy a 8 pixel pipeline card for this price?

Good point, I will definiately look into that cooler.

Have you tried ramsinks? I noticed there's no cooling for the back of the card...Wonder if that would help?

Running the ATI X800XL totally stock and so far I like it.

I'd like to find a program that can control the fan speed, but ATI Tool didn't seem to have the capability. Overally the card is quite nice, although it is the loudest thing in my system. I may check out that Arctic Cooling product, but I'm a bit nervous about messing with a $300 card so soon after purchasing it.

System:
A64 3200+
Chaintech VNF4 Ultra
Zalman 7700-AlCu
2X WD Raptor RAID 0
1 GB Corsair Value 2.5
NEC 3500

It was a great upgrade from my old AXP 1800 and 9700pro

The VF700CU comes with 8 small blue ram heatsinks. They seem to do the trick, but I wonder if something bigger would help any.

As a side note, if anyone with the Asus A8N SLI deluxe is planning on having this video card with the VF700 cooler and the zalman ZM-NB47, you will need to bend a few of the pins on the heatsink. I'm not sure if this is an issue with all of the x800xl's or just powercolor.

Thanks for the info annoyed. Sound is most important to myself and will be careful when I buy, as voiding the warranty is something I prefer not to do.

I should mention that my card is not LOUD, but with a Zalman 7700 at the lowest speed, a passive chipset cooler, and a Seasonic Supertornado PSU, the rest of my system is pretty dang quiet.

The card's fan occasionally ramps up during games, and then I find it annoying, but other than that I'd classify the noise as OK. Not quiet by any stretch, but not too loud either. I think it is about the same volume as my 9700 pro (but the X800 is louder @ full speed).

I put a zalman heatpipe on my 9700pro, as it was by far the loudest thing in my system. As I say I am rather anal about quiet computing.

I find the fan noise rather high-pitched and loud. It has a very pronounced sound. Definitely the loudest thing in my case at idle.

I've purchased a VF700 @ Jab-tech for $24. Hopefully that will solve the problem. Can't tell you about temp changes because there is no monitor available for the ATI XL!

Umm, I think there is some confusion here. ALL Radeon X800 XL's have 16 Pipelines & 6 Vertex Shaders. Does not matter whether it has a PCI E bus or an AGP bus.

There is no different between the X800XL PCI Express card vs. the AGP for architecture just the bus speed & with PCI E having 16 lanes @ 100MHz vs. the AGP having 8 @ 66MHz.

Both AGP & PCIE will perform at 100% the same level.

what he said...

So, the cards are slow enough (i.e. not capable of maxing out the lower bus speed) that performance cannot degrade as in some cases of otherwise identical cards on PCI-33 vs AGP-66?

Huh?

I *think*, *maybe*, you're asking if the AGP8X variant of this card runs slower than the PCIe x16 variant because of the slower interface.

No, it does not. They run at practically the same speed. PCIe x16 *is* faster than AGP8X, but today's video cards aren't even using all of the bandwidth of AGP8X.
