x800xl or 6800gt pcie?

the best i've seen the x800 is about $370, and the 6800gt pcie $425.

Which do you think would be the better card for the money?

My most important concern is how long the card will last (ie be able to play games at 10x7), i would like it to make last two years if possible. I was thinking that because the 6800gt uses pixel shader 3, it might be able to last a bit longer, but i wasn't sure about that.

I have heard that the Unreal Engine 3 won't be able to run on any current cards, but i don't remember if i heard that before the nv40's were out, and i also can't seem to find when the engine is coming out. Anyone have more info on this?

Thanks.

The Unreal Engine will use the new DX (rumored to be named Avalon) 10 and will not be out until 2006IIRC. RIght now 2 SLI 6800U's (the fastest you get) can only run it on the lowest detail settings and only make like 30fps.

The X800XL's MSRP is $300. So it is still well above its MSRP. I would get the 6800GT, it is fast enough to justify the small cost upgrade, not to mention SM3, and Purevideo.

But with the U3 Engine being so early in development it has yet to be optimized. I highly doubt that it will require something equivalent to SLIed Ultras just to run at low detail. If that were the case then a lot of people will be unhappy if nVidia and ATI cannot release some faster cards. We are talking a huge jump in performance just to get to low detail quality from the current generation. To stick the power of two Ultras in one card and then improve upon that will take quite some time. Plus this will be the high end card, what of all the low-mid range users. I don't see cards being mainstream that can outperform SLIed Ultras for a while, a long while. And for Epic to release an engine that can only run on a 4Ghz+ FX and SLIed NV60? would be unheard of and foolish business decision.

The GT will be a decent bit faster than the XL, but you're paying about 50 bucks more. Whether that's worth it or not is up to you. The GT does have the slightly better feature set, plus the ability to go SLI if you'd ever swing that way. Personally, I'd get the GT, but I'm not you....

The 800XL is back at ati.com for preorder at $299 minus 10%. Granted, you might have to wait a month to get it, but that's a pretty nice deal.

No, Avalon is part of the new UI for longhorn. As for 30fps, I have no idea where you pulled that from, other than the fact it's bs....

You'll most likely be waiting quite a few months if ATIs past history regarding latest generation products for sale on their site is any indication.

Yeah, he's full of it. A single 6800 ultra was pulling around 30 during the unveiling of the unreal 3 engine over half a year ago. I'm positive that SLI would bring you well above that number.

Ok yeah i just randomly make things up

Run a keyword search throughout the forums and multiple people have stated this. Also a single 6800U was not pulling around 30 during DIII. Maybe a 5800U but certainly not a 6800U.

30fps was an estimate but people have been stating it in threads, check the thread on the Unreal Engine, a couple people say it there.

Also remember the UE is not due out for two more years. We have to more cycles of CPU's and Video cards to go through, plus DX10.

Can you get a link?? I looked at ati.com, but i must have missed it.

I couldn't access that link through firefox, had to use IE. Strange.

How do you know it is coming out in March? Thats to long for me to wair, so im probably just going to get a 6800gt.

Anyone have any other thoughts about which is better at current prices?

Piss, I mistyped. I didn't mean DIII, I meant unreal engine 3. And my post was directed at your comment that an ultra sli setup would run it at 30, which is far too low of a number considering that a single 6800 ultra which demoed a non-optimized version of the engine back around the April/May timeframe (coinciding with the 6800 launch IIRC) was running at roughly 30 FPS. Sorry about the mistype (I had D3 on the mind from another thread).

Odd...

Unless you can find an XL for sub $350 prices I would go with a 6800GT. Even that is kind of stretching it. If it were MSRP no question but like I said before I wouldn't count on the cards hitting that price until the R520 comes out and by then they will be dropping below MSRP to accomodate the new cards which will again be over MSRP and the cycle will continue.
