My roomate picked up an x800xl for his older gateway 700xl this weekend. It's a:

P4 Northwood on a

Lexington (?) Motherboard

850E Chipset

1GB RDRAM

with a couple of IDE hard drives.

The problem is, when I install the drivers after a run of driver cleaner pro, it doesn't register as a display adapter under the device manager. Instead, it comes up as "unknown" with that little grey diamond. Performance is way, way below where it should be, with stuttering in HL2 even at 1024x768.

I've tried installing the software to update the chipset drivers, although Gateway's site is kind of vague. I have almost no experience with Intel, so I'm kind of swinging in the dark here.

Any thoughts? Could seriously use some help.

Well, AGP 4X won't be a problem as there is no real speed difference between 4X and 8X.

Run DXDIAG and see if AGP texture acceleration is enabled.

Did you remove the previous vidcard drivers? If not, that can sometimes cause trouble.

Yes, it is a Gateway and yes AGP texture acceleration is enabled.

I'm not positive, but the PSU is a 250W. I know that's on the low side, but should that inhibit the card from displaying properly in the device manager? Let alone running slowly? Like I said, I'm not sure.

It's a possibility, let a one a 250 watt psu has to power up the high range agp vid card and other components inside.
