X800XL 256MB

I have an ATI X800 XL 256MB version. I would like to know what is the max temperature that my card can withstand. The max temperature I've seen so far is 78 C when using ATI Tool to scan for artifacts.

Also, what is the max overclock I can achieve on this card. I did some googling and I found some reviews achieving an overclock of around 440mhz core and 1140mhz core.

The main thing that I'm concerned with is the temperature of the card. Overclocking doesn't matter for now.

On a side note, my highest 3D Mark06 score was around 1800 after selecting "run all" under tests and "deafult" for setting. My rig is in the link. Many thanks in advance.

I used to have one and it's really not a very good overclocking card. Not sure what the max temp is but 78 sounds pretty hot.

I had one too, not very good at OCing. Even slapped a AC5 on it and maybe squeezed out another 30Mhz on memory. That's like $1.15 per MHz on the aftermarket cooling.

Sold it to someone on this board. Never saw mine get that high, though. I can't accurately recall it's idle/load temps.

The x800xl cards dont overclock well - none of them do. 78C while load testing in Atitool is ok - that furry block heats up the card more than most 3d games. Just keep it below 80C as a general guideline.

Judging from the reviews, X800XL were good overclockers from their days. Now in the new age it's..🙁 I should've bought the 7600GT instead.

How about my 3D Mark 06 score? Is it correct or is it like way below average.

I'm pretty sure my x800xl 256MB maxed out around 430-435; so not even +10%. I have the Built by ATI version so it has a pretty lame little heatsink. As for temperatures, mine will stay around 60-65 degrees (while OC'd) so long as the heatsink has been very recently cleaned. It will start hitting 70-75 after a month or so.

P.S. And come to think of it I adjusted the fan options in ATITool so that I wouldn't hit 75+ so easily. I think I have my fan set to hit 100% at 65 degrees.

I used to have the same card... until the fan/heatsink went on it. It was running at over 100 C most of the time, yet it was stable as long it didn't hit 107! I wouldn't recommend running the card that hot, though...

As I recall, I could only get +20 mhz more out of the core, and +30 out of memory, on the stock cooling. Even when the fan was working, it would run at 80 C or so.

As has been pointed out X800 XL doesn't overclock well. It has something to do with the new 0.11 process of the time and there was some leakage in the design.

mine is idle right now around 37c. running the 3d render in ATI tray tools afte 10 minutes it's 50c . that's with an after market zalman cooler vf700-alcu and an antec 900 with the stock 4 fans running on low settings.

almach1: Did you overclock the card?

Would the 7600GT be better than the X800XL? I had the chance to get the 7600GT but I bought the x800xl because it was cheaper. BTW, I live in Canada, so I couldn't buy from newegg.

Yes, but not by much in most games. The only games where it would have a significant advantage is in games that use the Doom 3 engine.
