Hi All,

Looking for an upgrade for ATI X800 Pro (PCIE) and I'd like to spend apx $150-$200.

Would like to go Nvidia this time and would appreciate recommendations, primary use is gaming on an AMD athlon 3500 cpu.

Thanks much in advance for opinions.

9600GT would be your best bet, though i've seen 8800GT's dip JUST under $200 without MIR,so you should consider one of those too, though with the 9600GT,you'll be able to afford a new CPU + Board + RAM (If you're still on Socket 939)

Thanks for the input, those are 2 of the cards i was looking, along with the 7950GT.

I am on a 939 board. I built it apx 2 years ago using this forum for a lot of the input. I want to buid another and am going to start getting up to speed on what is the best bang for my buck regarding performance.

Thanks again

Considering the price/performance of the 9600 GT and the lower power consumption I would go with that one. You'd be able to keep the same PSU most likely and save a little cash to perhaps upgrade the rest of your system sooner than later.

Wow I've been out of the loop for a while because I still love the performance of my socket 939 setup and feel all I really need to do to get more performance is up the clock on my single processor 2.2ghz processor or buy a dual core Opteron overclock the heck out of it.

A Single-Core 3500+ would bottleneck his 8800GT/9600GT/whichever card he gets per se,by getting a E2200,a decent OCing board and 2x1GB DDR2 800,and OCing to at least 2.6GHz,getting rid of any bottlenecks, not saying its nessacary (Spelling?) to get it,since a 9600GT or 8800GT is still a huge jump over a X800Pro with that CPU,though you're gonna have to ditch 939 someday.

Well I'm in the same boat as he is so I'm concerned. Would a socket 939 Dual Core Opteron overclocked to about 3.0ghz be a good solution for now. I've really got to read aobut the differences now because I've been out of the loop for a while now.

I doubt you will get 3.0ghz out of the Opteron 939s. They don't overclock that well unless you get the lower clocked models like the 165 and 170. Best bet is to find a 180 and at best try to get 2.6 out of it. Good luck on that. You need to get aftermarket cooling.

I can tell you, my 8800GS Superclocked, 4g ram and Opteron 180 stock is a nice rig. Its not as good as my C2D 2.96mhz, 3850, 4g but I don't kick and scream when I use it for games which is often.

I have a SanDiego 4000+ that easily did 2.8 on a foxconn mATX 939 board+ and a 7950GT OC 512MB that I could do $135.00 shipped with DC (for both) if you're interested LMK.

I say go for the video card now and upgrade the rest later if necessary.

MSI 9600GT is ~$140 after MIR at chiefvalue.com
MSI 8800GT is ~$185 after MIR at newegg/chiefvalue
EVGA 8800GTS is ~$207 after MIR + coupon code (see hot deals forum for details) at newegg
