X800Pro -> 7800GS?

Hey all,

Haven't been keeping up to date lately on video cards, although I do understand that generally speaking the fastest AGP part right now would be the 7800GS -- and in particular eVGA's "superclocked" 7800GS AGP.

Presently I have an aging x800PRO - AGP, 256mb, 12 pipes, not unlockable, etc.
I regularly run it with about a 10% overclock applied to core and mem. I'm sure it's still slower than a stock x800XL.

Now, I really want to boost the visual performance of Oblivion - just like everyone else!

Would an eVGA (or BFG, depending on which has the better price) 7800GS AGP give me a significant and noticeable improvement?

I'm hoping that someone has some benchmark results handy which can show an improvement in Oblivion...

NOTE: a full platform upgrade cannot be justified at this time for myself, since it would require the replacing of too many components. And I don't particularly think the CPU power of my finely-tuned socket 754 system is the problem with current games.

Well i'd say yes. Some may argue that but what I know is that the 7800GS is the BEST AGP card available from NVIDIA right now.

But i'd keep that money and the x800 and update later when you can dish out a little more for a PCI-E based system.

But IF you really want to upgrade right now and want to stay with AGP, then the 7800GS is the right choice.

EDIT: I played Oblivion with my "old" 6800GS and the game was running really fine in 1152*864. So I guess the 7800GS will get you to 1280*960 or 1280*1024 easily. I can play with a smooth 25+ FPS outdoor with my new 7600GT.

Hmm the more I look at benchmarks the more I believe the 7800GS is a waste of cash and nothing but marketing. In this review the card is sometimes beat by the 6800 GT and by the X800XL, from that one could easily extrapolate that the X850 series would be much faster.

But below are some more benchmarks to consider, for the cost I dont think its even a slightly worthwhile upgrade, at least according to these benchmarks. Buy a 6800 GT or X800Xl or X850 and I think you will be alot happer. Saving money and getting at least as good of performance and in some cases even better.

Its not that its a bad card, in fact you would get more features using it, its just imo at least the cost is not jusitifed by its numbers. Save your money for a eventual PCIx upgrade and then get a 7800GT+ or X1800XT+ and I think you will be a heck of alot happier.

Wait, how can a 6800GT beat a 7800GS - even theoretically? Am I missing something here?

I hope it was just "immature drivers"...

currently 7800gs prices list from $275 and up...XFX 7600 GT XXX (590MHz) $169 MIR plus DFI NF4X Infinity $79
total=$278-> $248 after $30 MIR

overall cheaper than a 7800gs, performance is on par if not better, only replacing two components (Mobo/VC) and a better future GPU upgrade path.

Those x800 pro's were uber overclockers, stock was 475 and iirc most could hit 550+ pretty easily. Crank that baby up and wait till you can invest more for an upgrade.

What?! A socket 754 mobo with PCI-Express support? Wow, I really need to stop hibernating and get out of my bear cave! ;)

Yeah, doing more investigation on the 7800GS AGP reveals that it's beaten by the X850XT in a number of benchmarks. Thus, not a very confident upgrade from an X800Pro unless I'm just planning on playing Doom3/Quake4 all day long. I'll pass on this, and consider a mobo upgrade instead.

thanks

Well, since a 7800GS pretty much equals an X850XTPE, and an X850XTPE is 35% or so faster than the X800 Pro, I would say probably not worth it. In my experience, even a a 100% increase in performance is not enough to make an upgrade last more than a year.

I would hang in there with the X800 Pro until you could afford to go to a new platform. I suggest saving up for Conroe. Later this year, you will be able to buy a 1.86Ghz Conroe for around $200. It will probably be the value chip of the year.
