Just looking at building a pc for a friend, wondering which one of these was better. th X1600 has newer technology, but the GT02 flashed to an X850 is pretty powerful.

Edit: Using to primarily play the Sims and Sims2. Don't hurt me, it's not me.

A unlocked and OC'd gto2 is easily 2x as fast as a x1600pro. The x1600pro really does not have enough power to put advanced features like SM3 and HDR to good use. Even a gto2 would likely struggle in modern games with HDR, so the older feature set is a non-issue for these cards. But with such a large performance gap, the gto2 is by far the better choice.

Get the GTO2 if you are choosing between the two since the X1600 is generally a poor choice for a video card. It barely beats the 6600GT in most games and even loses in some. And the GTO2 (which are now basically unlocked by default) performs significantly better than both. As for newer technology, yeah X1600 supports SM 3.0 but isn't powerful enough to really utilize SM 3.0 features (notably OpenEXR HDR) in games so buying it for that purpose is really pointless. I would suggest however a 7600GT as a good combination of power (should be equal/better than the GTO2 performance wise) and new tech (SM 3.0) and at around the same price range as the GTO2.

^The gto2 and 7600gt are close to each other in performance. Each is better in some games and worse in others.
