X800GTO2 or 6800GS

I did some research, but I want to know how things stand right now at this moment in time.

What's the best PCIe deal for ~$200?

I was thinking x800gto2 -> x850xtpe mod.

Or is there a diamond-in-the-rough 6800GS card out there?

The motherboard isn't SLi or Xfire so no dual-card considerations, please.

I'm worried about the gto2. Do they all still unlock? The saphire OEM version on newegg.com is for $189. Is that one good?

Thanks.

It seems the current crop of GTO2's come factory unlocked and oc like crazy. I know it's tempting to grab a 6800GS because of the SM3.0 but from a raw speed perspective, the GTO2 is the best deal in graphics right now. Newegg was selling them for like 170 this weekend AR.

For raw speed - x800GTO2, most hit past x850xtpe specs.

6800GS generally are great OC'ers too.

It depends on what games you play now and what games you plan on playing, as well as IQ settings.

How high can you get a GS, in general? The eVGA one comes 490 stock, can it go any higher?

Mine does 530/1200 for everyday gaming. For overall gaming the GTO squared is hard to beat, but PureVideo put the GS past the GTO2 when I was looking for a sub $200 PCIe card, as I wanted more than just decent gaming performance.

i have a XFX 6800gs factory OC'd 485/1100mhz, i run it @520/1180mhz...for benchmarks i run it @540/1210mhz. also having SM3.0 is a nice plus.

I went with the GTO2. I play those games more and I just don't see me needing SM3 or PV. Thanks everyone.

Hi everybody

I am facing the exact dilema. I am thinking of upgrading from my current AGP 6600GT 128mb to either an X800 GTO2 or XFX 6800GS XXX given that i am managing to sell my 600GT . Realy cant get a clear picture if :

  • The performance difference will be noticeable enough and
  • Which of the two will perform better in what i do with it

I am mainly into simulators. LockOn is my main interest. Strike Fighters / Wings Over Vietnam, IL2 family, / Paciific fighters, Falcon 4 family, FS2004, TOCA 2/3, Richard Burns Rally, And some shooters with Farcry and Maxpayne on top and all WWII themes. And doing also some 3DS max.

My res of preference is 1024x768 and i prefer sims at least to be at 4x FSAA and 8x-16x AF

My board can take either AGP or PCI-E
