I put together a machine with parts I had leftover from some work.

Sempron 3000 754
biostar 6100 mobo
1 gb ram
audiophile 2496 soundcard

I dont have a budget for upgrades and its primary task to run video at 720p. I have both cards which is better?

Visontek x1550 or Powercolor x800gto?

I think the x800 might have extra pipelines open maybe 16

Yeah, I don't think that the X800 did much hardware video acceleration beyond MPEG-2 support.

From what I know the x1550 has AVIVO for encoding/decoding Mpeg4, Mpeg2, DivX and H.264.

The x800 gto has Videoshader:-

"With VIDEOSHADER? HD, the HIS X800 series takes advantage of its advanced shader processing engine for user programmable video effects, video quality enhancement, and encoding and decoding of many video standards, including MPEG1/2/4, Real Media, DivX and WMV9."
