the x800gto is unlockable/overclockable, but the 6800gs can also overclock and has sm3. i just can't decide which card i want. either will go in my gaming computer. i plan on keeping this card for a year or two untill directx10 cards come to a reasonable price. both cards are considered midrange now, so i don't see hdr running well on these cards. can you guys help me out? i don't know which will be the better value. what does the 6800gs bring that the gto doesn't? because clearly the gto when unlocked and overclocked is the faster card.

Doesn't the GTO have a better overclock anyway? The GS has SM3, and um, I guess that's it... also a strong card even if it doesn't overclock?

A GS performs just as well as a 6800GT, if you get the XFX XXX version you should get performance comparable to a 6800 Ultra.

Over here in Australia the cheapest 6800GS is $400

and the cheapest X800GTO is $300

Now here is how the stack up

X800GTO
12 Pipelines 400MHz Core overclocks to 575-625 core
980Mhz DDR overclocks to 1200MHz

6800GS
12 Pipelines 400Mhz Core overclocks to 460-495Mhz
1000Mhz DDR overclocks to 1200Mhz

Now the 6800GS comes with SM3.0 but would be too slow for when games fully require SM3.0 so its not really a big deal... now HDR on the other hand looks and runs a hell of allot better on the 6800GS then the X800GTO ... But not allot of games use it.

The X800GTO overclocks a hell of allot more and costs $100 less i dont know about over there but here in Aus thats how it stands. so for $100 less you get a faster card.

I dont know about you but i went with the X800GTO and put a VGA silencer on it i run this thing at 600/600 it does overclock to 635/620 .. as i dont like to push my luck when overclocking.

Both cards are just fine! if they cost the same then the 6800GS would be a better buy but with the X800GTO being cheaper ... its the one to get!

The GTO hes talking about has a very high (almost 100%) chance of unlocking to 16 pipes. Its a no brainer right now, but once they are sold out of those, the GS wins over a regular GTO.

Wait a minute here, why mod a card when there are risks involve (well of course there's a way to fix it right...?). I would say 6800GS is my best bet.

All the people who recommend the 6800gs: would you also pick the x1800xt if the 512gtx was available for $100 less? No? Then WTF is the point of getting a slower card that costs more? Well, besides blind fanboyism, SM3 obsession, too chicken to flash a bios, but seriously the OC'd gs can not match a gto when unlocked ond Oc'd properly. It does beat it if you keep both cards at stock, but that's just for the wussies. ;)

Munky, not everyone wants to mod their card. If you don't, obviously the 6800GS is better. :) But if you do, then the C3D GTO is a great deal.

Case in point, my fiance has my old PC with a BFG 6800OC that has all its pipes unlock. But, if you do a driver update, you have to go back in and re-edit the pipes to get them used. Unfortunately, I'm the only one of us capable of figuring that out, so that PC only has full speed part of the time. hehe.

are U sure a X800 UNLOCKED and Overclocked would get less FPS than a 6800GS OCed in HDR, like Lost Coast?

Im interested in a X800 Unlockeable, just to play Lost Coast with full HDR enable (1024x768), all options full.
Would be possible?
2.2 Ghz, 1 Gb OCZ, etc...

I picked up a 6800gs because overclocking and unlocking isn't a sure thing. Yes if it unlocks fully and overclocks to 500/500+ then you've got a fast card for a cheap price. If it doesn't your stuck with a slower card.

I also picked the 6800gs because my last card was dying. Crashing my computer artifacting etc. That was my first ati card I had tried and the geforce 4's I had before it are still working perfectly. My roommate had a simular experience with his 9700. So in my personal experience ati's cards just aren't quite as good as nvidia's.

I played Lost Coast on my gto, at 1280 resolution with 4xAA, 8xAF, all settings maxed out. The average fps was in around 30-40 fps, so it was playable, but I noticed some slow downs. At 1024, however, it should run smooth no problem.

Sort of agree. If you're gonna run stock, GS is better. If flashing your card and a slight risk of mod failure doens't scare you, the Connect3d GTO is a faster, cheaper option.

well obviously i would overclock it the gto..but i've never overclocked a video card before and i have no clue how to do it other than the detect optimal overclock (does that even work?). and both cards cost the same...evga 210- $50 cod2. $180 gto. i already ordered a vf700 cu. i guess i'll go with the faster card-the gto.

why doesn't the gto run hdr as well??? i've never heard this....not that it matters because neither card can really run hdr on the newest/future games.

WTF are you talking about? THe GTO costs 165 shipped at Monarch after rebates. THe GS costs around 210 dollars shipped.
