X800 XT Platinum Edition or 6800 Ultra

The 6800Ultras are faster in doom 3, and the x800xts are faster in everything else. Pretty simple. There are a few exceptions, but this is the general rule of thumb.

If you got he money for the x800xtpe, its the best on the market. I guess alot of poeple recommand the nivdia cards is because they are a better deal when it comes to price and performance. Forexmaple for roughly the same performance in cards, the 6800GT is better compared to the x800PRO becuase its like 50 to 60 less. However if you have enough money for teh x800xtpe i would definately get it. Dropping $700 seems kinda of rediculous, because in like 2 years a new card will come out. When buying techological equipment i tend to buy the lastest but not the best. The best at teh time is never a deal becuase of the mark up for it becuase there is little supply and demand for that product whihc keeps the price high really high.

For example, a Enzo and a 911 Turbo, Enzo is rediculously priced and who would need that performance where as a 911 turbo is "reasonable" and still very good for people's needs

I'm with NVidia in this round. Innovation is needed in the gfx card industry, and they seem to have pushed further ahead in this respect this generation than ATI. Also, Doom III performance is nothing to scoff at, because that engine is bound to be licensed out like mad. But, the truth is, that you can't go wrong with either one. Pony up the dough and be happy with either choice🙂

Althought the 6800 requires more power, it is more future proof because it supports Shader Version 3.0 and the ATI chipset does not. As far as performance goes, I believe they are close enough that there is not a visable difference between the two. A benchmark may indicate a 5-10 fps difference, but the human eye will not see any difference.

A year from now, when the shader 3.0 games are out, the 6800 will shine.

If money is no object, then I'd go with the X800 XT PE. However for the best bang for the buck in a high end card, the 6800 GT is my choice. Some GT's, like the Gainward Golden Sample, are guaranteed to run at Ultra speeds making them an even better value.

Only by 10 FPS though. The 6800 runs at 60 FPS. The X800 runs at 50 FPS. But the image quality is with the 6800 because it supports 3.0 PS.

OMG ............. SM3.0 OFFERS NO IMAGE QUALITY ENHANCEMENT ITS A MORE EFFECIENT CODE so many websites have stated this, even in the enitial reviews of the 6800 series they stated that, i even think anand said so. and even with SM3 6800's are playing catch up in farcry 1.2.

I know that the ATI x800 xt PE (AGP) is a rare one to find at the moment so I guess that is why it's so pricey. But on the Shop ATI site, they have it listed at $499 but it is out of stock at the moment. I finally gave in and put in an order at the ATI site. I'm not in a hurry to get one and if I do get one before the year's end, that price will make it all worthwhile. If I don't, oh well. I like ATI customer service and tech support from previous experience. Maybe the high end nVidia has some stuff the ATI high end card doesn't but ATI is still alright by me.

XTPE

Faster, cooler, smaller, more succesful driver suite I really can't think of one advantage for the Ultra unless you like playing in the dark (doom) and trouble shooting.

I have a 6800 Ultra that I was lucky enuff to get for msrp and while it's a fast card and the iq has improved tremendously, (depending on which drivers you use of course ) I can't help but think the iq was better with my old 9800xt and the X800 pro I tried after that. I haven't experienced any artifacting or lockups that others have said they've experienced but i do get shimmiring and missing textures is some, primarily older games, that were not present before. This card definitely kicks ass in Doom 3 but I'd like to try an 800XT. Btw, I try and get my video cards from Circut City for their excellent, free, no hassle 14 day return policy 😉 .

I agree with you. The tech support is very helpful. They have fixed all of my problems.

XT. Can't beat the raw speed of it. But it's very hard to find one. You likely have a better chance of picking the winning horse three races in a row.

Couldn't have said it better myself.

I have both cards. The 6800 stays in my box 90% of the time. They're my preference, but both are solid choices.
