Just had a question about the performance of these cards. I remember an article of these cards performance on AT and the x800 XT seemed to dominate the 6800's.

Has Nvidia released new drivers that have increased the performance on the 6800's by a lot?

I say this because I'm looking into buying a Nvidia 6800GT Ultra - but I want to be 100% certain that Nvidia isn't cheating in their drivers by disabling AA or anything else that could give it a lead.

My other question is, how would an x800XT PE Overclocked do against the 6800GT Ultra (which is already overclocked ?) ?

Regards,

Pixle.

First the GT and the Ultra are different cards. There is no such thing as the GT Ultra.

Now the XT/PE X800 beats the 6800 Ultra in most things but not by ALOT but a fair amount and not in Doom III. These cards both have a MSRP of 499 though you are going to need a LOT of luck to find either of these instock or even shipping soon. If you do find it in stock it will ussually cost between 550 and 1000 for the XTPE and between 550 - 650 for the 6800 Ultra.

So to some it up don't bother looking foreither of these because they are rip offs.

Now both manufacuters also have their more main stream performance cards the x800 Pro and the 6800 GT. Both of these cards are great in terms of performance and money. They both have MSRP's of 399 but you can occasionaly find deals for as low as 350 but these are ussually few and far between.

With these two cards the GT tends to be a little bit faster than the Pro. Esspecially in OpenGL games including DoomIII but the x800 can edge the GT out in games like Far Cry that are heavily DX based. If you can find either of these for a good price go for it. They both have similar image quality. No cheating this time though some say ATI is using a little bit of trickery with their AF with these cards but you would NEVER be able to tell with out looking at some extremly close up shots and a the help of a trained eye.

The GT can ussually be oced to Ultra speeds no problem of course some can't be either way they have similar performance. The X800 Pro requires a hard mod to be like the XTPE because it only has 12 pipelines compared to the XTPE's 16. This mod does not ussually work but also doesn't seem to have a negative effect on the card so not to worry. The x800 pro can be OCed quite a bit because it has pretty low stock clocks and can pretty easily have the same clocks as the XTPE just with out the extra 4 pipelines. Once both cards are OCed they have about the same performance with one card being better than the other in specific cases and even then they are very close.

I would recommend either card. So if you can find one in stock grab it quick before its gone. If you are really into great performance in DoomII then grab the GT because it has much better performance. Though some rumors say the x800 will be better in HL2 but I doubt it will be MUCH better, but better none the less. I choose the 6800 GT because I found an extremely hot deal to get it for 301 a month or so back. Basically grab the card that you find for a good price or offeres the specific features you are looking for.

i agree with most of what JBT says, although i wouln't say the XT/PE beats the 6800 in MOST things, from what i've seen they both beat each other in about HALF of everything, which sucks to me because i like games on both sides.

but anyway, the 6800 is a better architecture then the X800, for what its worth.

go with the cheaper one for now (probably 6800 line) but don't go for the plain 6800, those aren't worth it, get at least the 6800GT.

Doom 3 = 6800 Ultra will/does dominate

HL2 = x800 XT PE is said to dominate(some 30%)

That shouldn't be all one basis their final decision on, just a bit more info.
