Is it really worth grabbing an X800 XL? It looks great, performs well, but the high cost...

Right now it's about at the MSRP of 300 bucks, but aren't newer cards already overdue?

At this point you might want to wait depending on what kind of card you have, seeing as how the next generation of cards is getting pretty close. I bought one several weeks ago though for Battlefield 2, and its comparable in price and performance to a 6800gt PCI-E (the PCI-E X800XL was cheaper than the 6800gt version, which is mainly why i chose it). I had a geforce 4 before though, so this was a huge upgrade for me and as far as i can tell it was rather worth it.

We all know how the current ATI cards drove down the price of the 9800 Pro real fast.;)

It depends on what card ur using.
The X800XL is though, the most-recognised graphic ccard of being most cost effective. (Most bang of bucks per performance) and I agree it's the best buy for mid-tier to lower-high-end stream of users

Actually it took a really long time to drive the 9800Pro to its current price.

The X800XL is the best buy right now. It performs similair to a 6800GT and is $100 cheaper for $250.

I'm using a Matrox Millenium guys. A Radeon 7000 would be a kickass upgrade at this point.

But this was for a new PC, and before the X800 XL came along I was eyeing the 6600 GT PCI-E card instead, but if this puts me as near as the reviews claim to the 6800 GT / Ultra cards then I can't see why not.

I probably will wait till the newer ones are released. Can't hurt really, it's not like I have any games from the last 3 years that need playing right away.

Get the X800 XL. I have a 9800 Pro right now and I just built a computer for someone with a 6600 GT. Although the 6600 GT is faster without AA/AF (probably due to the significantly faster CPU though...), my 9800 Pro wins when I enable 4xAA 16xAF, and that's how I've been playing games for the past year. So, even my 9800 Pro still beats the 6600 GT for the way I play games. Therefore, I'd say the X800 XL is a better choice than the 6600 GT.

Got my 800XL couple of days ago. I can play pretty much everything with max detail @ 1280x1024. AA @ 4x and AF @ 16x. I'm really happy with it. Not insanely loud either when the fan spins up. If you need the card right away go for it. Otherwise you could always wait and see the price/avaliability on the newer cards.

I actually upgraded from a 6600gt to an X800XL and I have to say the difference is remarkable. I get double the frames with AAx4 & AFx8 in Battlefield 2. the game looks amazing, never slows down, and everything is clearly defined & sharp.

Um I wanted to get an X800XL, but if you think about it, new cards are like a month away (or less). 7800GT can surely be found for some nice deal and ATI's gonna unleash some cards soon enough.

You're buying at the worst possible time basically. That is why I have decided to hold off on the X800XL...

I had planned to hold out for an 5xx card but chances are the mid-range AGP's (akin to 800XL) shan't be out 'till closer to the end of the year than now. For a PCIe, on the other hand, the shorter wait may be worth it. In any case, it's easy enough to recoup most of the cost when selling worldwide on eBay so I figger the "rent" on my recenty aquired XL will be negligible for the next six months or whatever.

I just got an Asus X800 XL. It was an upgrade from a 9600 pro, and let me tell you, for the price I was not expecting anything that great. but wow, like a few of the posters above have mentioned, max detail on any game I play and it's still smooth. I personally have never owned a video card that can do this and for a very reasonable price.

Definately worth every penny IMHO

I recently purcharsed an ATI X800XT from someone here in the forums and I previously had an ATI 9800 Pro and saw a 2~3 times difference between the cards. I got it for 300 shipped with an ati silencer rev 4. I got it because I didnt want to do any major upgrades at the moment as my system is still very fast and the only bottle neck was the 9800 Pro. I didnt expect the X800XT to be that much better but low and behold it rocks, even tho its still AGP. Plenty of life left in my system now.

Ordered from Dell last week, Delivered today from DHL,

AIW x800 XT $337, then subtract $50 for the ATi rebate. So, $287 delivered

Considering XT > XL and I got the AIW I say you shouldn't get the XL right now. As others have mentioned, prices are going to drop, and $300 seems high.

Now time to sell my BFG 6800 OC on eBay

its can be had for about 260 now and I'm really considering buying one as I am going to build a new system as soon as I pick a video card (I want to get this thing ordered buy the card is holding me up). The x800xl is perfect for what I'm looking for in every regard (price, performance, relative quietness, etc...) except for the fact that it lacks sm 3.0. I dont know too much about it other than the fact that some upcoming titles i'm looking at will make use of it and I'll be left behind using sm 1.1 if they dont code for sm2.0. I dont upgrade often, rather build a rig a keep it for at least 3 years, so I'm kinda stuck on this one hangup (and therefore considering the 6800gt pcie because of the sm3.0).
