X800 XL overclocking headroom?

I'm planning a new NF4-based rig, and so far the PCI-E price/performance nod has to go to the X800 XL at the ~$300 price point. (Unless you're a SM 3.0 fanatic, and we can't help that, can we?)

The thing is that even with primo cooling it looks like the X800 XLs hit their process wall really early, topping out at ~450 core. I'm going to be watercooling whatever card I get, and I'd like to see a better ceiling than that. Would a 6800GT do better under a Maze4 acetal?

6800gt would likely get to ultra and maybe up if you have a nice chip

x800xl goes max i've ever seen around +75core(need +120 to get to x860xt speeds i think.)

driver heaven got
ati reference: 432/1150

bit-tech got:
club tech x800xl: 455/1112
msi: 430/1094
sapphire: 429/1092

Legion got
HIS: 455/1030

Rage3d got
HIS:475c/1055m

pcstats.com
gigabyte(no fan, passively cooled):421/1026

club overclocker
connect3d:447/1092

xbit:
powercolor: 435/1160

digit-life
HIS:440/1170

stock speed is
400/980

as you see, ti is generalyl a porr overclocker, mostly hitting around 30-40mhz ocs.

"Re: 6800GT OC vs X800XL
Well, Vold Modding a risky, & I did see many X800XL's overclock well past 550MHz with water cooling. I'm not too far from 500MHz, but @ 480MHz, my temps are still around 36C to 38C MAX LOAD, but not enough Voltage.

I'll see what I can do, but I am very happy with what I have right now. Plus, when I took off the heatsink & fan, from my X800XL, there was thermal paste EVERWHERE on the GPU. No wonder they are running HOT.

from hardware analysis forum. seems to be able to rack up some good ocs, but unfortunately 6800gt gets much better ocs without the voltmod and waterblock.
x800xl, 7-10% is the norm. 6800gt, 15-20% is the norm(with stock cooling for both.)

yeah the x800xl doesnt seem to oc too well

especially the PCI-E ones without the extra power connector. it doesnt need the conenctor to work at stock speeds. but the powercolor card and another one which had the power connector present overclocked much better. but only to about 450 ish. non power connector cards mustered bout 420-430

think bit-tech.net got that 450 ish clock onthe powercolor card

i think the problem is, as with the 9800pro, ...the stock cooler is barely enough, and not to well desgined

nvidias great lump seems to do a good job, well built and designed, and my leadtek 6800GT is a beast with all that copper.

i love ati(rage pro oced 75% memory, 50% core with some extra 80mmm fans blowing on it.)

but i still have to recommend nv this gen if you look to oc.

Thanks for all the refs -- I knew I'd gotten the general idea by looking around, but the specific numbers may make my decision a bunch easier.

I have the Powercolor X800XL and with the ATI Silencer 5 Rev 2 have gotten to 465/580. The ATI Silencer has made a huge difference in temps: Stock 44/70c idle/load w/ Silencer 34/47. I haven't played with any of the memory settings yet to see if I can get a little more out of it but I'm happy with what I've gotten so far.

I have a BBA X800XL AGP8X and with the ambient case temp. at about 34C the card idles at about 44C and tops out at about 65C when running RTHDRIBL for an hour straight. This is with the card overclocked to 435/1100.

And speaking of overclocking ceilings, I haven't found mine yet. At 435/1100 the card is very fast. I love having 16 pipelines. Games are sooo smooth. UT2K4 at 1280x1024x32 with 4xAA and 8xAF was amazing, my average fps was above 120 on 4 different maps with a dozen bots in godlike mode and all in-game settings at their very highest level.
