X800, X600, X300 what do these mean?

With the recent development of the Xx00 line, I was wondering: which is which? That is, relative to thre previous lines:

I already know that the X800 is off of R420 and is thus an entirely new card (I know, R420 was based off of the 9800). But what of the other Xx00 cards? I assume (correctly or not) that they simply renamed previous cards, and posibly put them in PCIe.

So does the X600 = 9800 pro/XT/NP, or 9700 pro/NP?
Does the X300 = 9600 Pro/XT/NP?

Or posibly are they truly new cards, based off the R420 or another new chip?

ATI's midrange/low-end cards are nothing but rehashes of last gen's models. The only real differences is that they are PCI-E and sport a new name.

In terms of performance:

X600 series = 9600 series

X300 series = 9200 series

And cost twice as much.

There are rumours of a $200 X700 performing betwixt the 9800XT and the X800. Might be nice.

Now that the 6600GT benchies are out, they'd best release that thing too. Hopefully the X700 is available in an AGP version and not a PCI-e (or whatever) only.

It is (as said above) a PCI-E rerelease of the R9200, which is, I suppose, a rerelease of some variant of the R200/R250.

Nope, X300 is the PCIE reincarnation of the plain 9600, X300SE is 9600SE. Just go read the "cheatsheet" article on Anandtech's front page ... table on pg. 5 ;)

Why does anyone really rehash old cards amyway, at least in terms of performance. Each newer card should perform better and should be faster than the last card, period. Its commercialism at its worst. I have a geforce 4 4200 in my other pc and bought a geforce fx 5200 expecting to find that I got a faster card at a nice price. After checking out the reviews I found that I was dead wrong.

Doesn't really make sense to release a PCIe card for the budget and mainstream markets yet. Sill ATi
