X800 Refurb Deal From ATI - Artifacts :(

Hi All,

Was I unlucky, or are other people having problems with this refurb card from ATI (See one of the many threads regarding this deal)? Seemed fine at first, no artifacts etc. Ran 3dmark 2005 without problems.

The odd thing is that ATITool could not overclock the chip at all without giving me error messages. In fact, it kept dialing back the speed of the chip way below stock speeds because it claimed it was getting errors. I assumed that it was a program problem, as I was not seeing any artifacts while using.

Ran it all night with 3dmark 2001 (@stock speeds), and it started artifacting and tearing quite badly this morning.

Is this an isolated case, or have other people been having similar problems. Is this the price we pay for a refurb?

Also, has anyone else had similar problems with ATITool?

Thanks!

@Bulldog: I got it directly from ATI.com. RMA shouldn't be a problem, but I wanted to be sure that others wern't having the same problem with this deal. Might go with one of the other deals from NewEgg or TigerDirect.

@Dani: I figured it was the most appropriate forum, as it is directly regarding a hot deal that has been posted here an infinte number of times. Thought it would be good to put out a warning if this is really a bum card. Bit of a newbie here, so if I was wrong, mucho apologies.

Mods: If this is indeed the wrong forum please move thread to the correct forum.

I wouldn't have ran ATI tool all night, that program is a POS. Just OC it manually, take it up little by little and run a game to check for artifacts and keep bumping it up if you need to.

Did you read the OP? If so, try again...

Sorry to hear about the bad luck, but I would just RMA it. A bad apple gets through every now and again :)

If you ran 3Dmark all night you probably overheated your card. My guess is you have a poorly ventilated case. As for your ATITool problem, you should get ATI Tray Tools and try the artifact tester in that one.

BTW you should have posted this in the original deal thread.

Scout, you did OK. This was a hot deal and alot of people were jumping on it. Good to let them know if anyone has problems with it. Thanks for trying to warn us. I like a new member with common sense.

Welcome to AT.

I originally posted this in HardOCP's forums:

Just a heads up. I had to RMA my card. It wasnt very stable and started experiencing lots of image corruption (in both 3D and 2D). That was followed by distorted image and verticle bars everywhere....Shop ATI said the only thing they could do was credit me back. No replacement card or other offer. Sucks....

Both GPU and ram were at stock speeds. All i had been doing was playing WoW (which was stable at first but became progressively more unstable). Then on sunday, while i was playing, the screen suddenly became all corrupted with random symbols everywhere and verticle lines. I restarted, everything seemed fine but it happend again. Restarted, reinstalled drivers (5.8). Everything fine for a few minutes. Desktop starts to go corrupted. Restarted again. Now everything after post is corrupted. I took the card out, put it back in the AGP slot. Restarted and corruption everywhere now. Including BIOS. I let the card sit for a bit and tried it again. I got the bios up and running okay, but its still all f'ed up in windows. I still have the card btw. The card didnt feel all that hot and the fan was running fine (very loud after startup but quiet all other times including load). My power supply (yes it has plenty of juice) and monitor are fine. Anyone got any ideas? I'll probably send it back tomorrow unless i decide to give it one more try later tonight. I guess i'll just have to be happy with my geforce4 4200....

You should complain to a supervisor and have them upgrade it or something
In the website, they claim 3 year warranty.

I had a somewhat similar problem. When I run ATItool to find the max core and memory OC, I cap at about 570 Core and 580 Memory, but when I up my actual clock to just 540 Core and 570 Memory, the moment I start up BF2, my whole screen gets these funky vertical lines and all this wierd static - doesn't really look like artifacts. It goes away on restart.

Might just be a problem in ATItool (I agree with it being a POS - always crashing), but when I run with standard clock, its stable for hours on end of BF2 on max settings 4xAA. G'luck RMAing this bad boy.
