HI all I just bought the x800 pro card from ati for 400 euro in greece
and I dont know whether I should keep it or return to the shop! My
system is p4 3.15 (over cloacked) with radeon 9700 pro. In rome total
war I get sometimes slowdowns since I am playing at 1280 resolution.
So I thought I should change the card. The difference in speed is
double from reviews I see. My system does not have
an pci express slot so the new x850 and x800 series is out of the
question. Rumor is that ati might release an agp version of these
cards but if they do they will do in january and that menas that a new
card will arriive in greece in march. Is this card worth it. ? I
wont be playing higher reolutions than 1280 since thats native in my
monitor. I wont play doom 3 but yes to hl2 so an ati is generaly a
better choice. Any thoughts?

i have the same card and honestly the only reason i bought it is because the two places i went to ran out of the 6800gt. that being said, i am very happy with this card, i used rage3d and overclocked the memory and gpu to near x800xt specs. yeah the 6800gt has 16 pipes as opposed to the 12 of the 800pro but i am running at 1280 (native resolution of my monitor) and hl2 as well as the video card killer that is doom3 runs smooth as silk.

if your happy with the card then keep it. on advantage the ati cards have over the nvidea cards is they draw less power from your psu.

Depend if you are happy. The X800 might not outperform the 6800GT in most benchmarks, but it's a good card and some positives that weight in. I have the BBA X800 pro, it single slot, lower power, overclocks very well. The fan default is only 66% RPM, and can be controlled via ATItool. I think the driver issues and game bugs with the 6800 series is more problematic, at least from all the boards I read. This may simply be due to the sheer number of 6800 cards out there, but it seems like there are a lot of stuttering, crashing, artifacts, etc. complaints around. So if you want raw fps in Doom III, the 6800GT is the clear choice. I almost bought a 6800GT, but I got a great deal on my X800 pro and now I'm glad I have it now. Like the other guy said, if you have a VIVO model, you can unlock the 4 pipes and OC it. Even with 12 pipes and mild OCing, the X800 pro can keep up with a 6800GT in most games and beat it in Source/HL2.

I recommend Nvidia cards all the time, my best friend has the 6800GT (though the EQ2 stuttering pisses him off). Both brands have pros and cons. It's too bad the X800 pro does not have a MSRP of $350, which is the best price point for it IMO. I see them for $430 a lot, this is far too much. So if you can get a 6800GT for the same price and the benchmarks concern you, return it.
