X800 Pro vs. x800xl

First of all, I couldn't really find any clear cut answers to my questions, but if you do, a link is greatly appreciated.

So heres the situation: im debating whether or not i should get the pro or the xl. This is for PCI-E, and I can get the pro for $240 and the XL for $270. The XL has 16 pipes, but the pro can oc more, and is already has a higher core clock. How would an oc pro compare to an oc xl, with no unlocking whatsoever. I know the vivo pros have 1.6 mem chips; do non vivos come with 2.0? Also, do xl's come with 1.6 mem chips, if so what brands? Whats the mem timing on the BBA XL's? And is it proven that power colors oc more cause of the extra power connector?

Thanks in advance.

It's always funny to see the X800 Pro get 4700 3dmark05, and the X800 XL get 4800 and yet everyone goes on about how the 6800 GT rapes the pro, and yet the XL owns the GT lol

Ever since ebay started to get flooded with all these pcie pros...ive just been thinking...where do they compare to the xl. btw...nice oc on ur pro. Im sure that outperforms an oced xl. Is ur pro a vivo?

The XL does not "own" the GT, its almost as fast. And when the price is cheaper, then the XL is usually a much better choice.

I've finally started to see some "reasonable" X800Pro prices, priced below the XL where it performs.

FWIW, my BBA XL overclocks to about 440/570 (stock is 400/490) with an Arctic Cooling ATI Silencer 5 rev. 2 installed. The core got to about 420ish on the stock cooler.

With the Pro, there is no guarantee you will be able to unlock to 16 pipes. Of course the XL and pro score about the same in 3Dmark, because 3Dmark runs at 1024x768 no AA or AF. In a real game, running 1600x1200 4xAA 8xAF, the XL beats the 12-pipe Pro handily (15-20% average fps difference, with probably a larger min. fps difference). However, if you luck out and can unlock your Pro to 16 pipes, it will beat the x800XL even with both cards overclocked to their max. It's a gamble

BTW man, get the POWERCOLOR XL, it has a molex connector. It should help with ocing or stability. Its a nice thing to have 🙂

Unfortunately, the Powercolor sells for $50-$100 more than BBA XLs right now. Hardly worth it for 20-25Mhz of extra overclocking headroom.

Maybe at some point, but the cheapest Powercolor from a reputable vendor is $344 at Chiefvalue right now.

I doubt ill get lucky and unlock a vivo - manufacturers have started to cut pipes, and the gpu quality is not as high (at least so ive heard). Do u guys have any information whether the memory is substantially different for different manufacturers.
