X800 Pro vs X800 XL vs 6600 GT

Hi..

Im curious which of theese would be the best to go with? Im on a bit of a budget, but is it worth it to just move up from 6600 GT and get an X800?

And if it is, X800 Pro or XL?

What resolution and quality settings do you play on?

If 1280x1024 with little to no AA or AF, then 6600GT is, by far, the best bang for the buck.

Here are some benchmarks to help illustrate the performance gains.

6600gt is a great budget card. If you decide to get a better card, the X800XL is an excellent choice.

Since you're going PCI-Express, you might as well go X800XL. X800XL is equal to 6800GT in performance and it's only about $260-280 anywhere. If you're playing @ 1280x1024, you might appreciate the X800XL as you can jack up AA and AF.

it gets a little annoying when people keep using the SM 3.0 argument as the sole basis of making an endorsement for an nvidia card. I'm no ATI fanboy or nothing but its just bad. The FX5200 is DX9 compliant, does that mean all these current games like it more? Please once and for all understand that its just a feature set, not a quantum leap in performance.

that i am! I will fully accept all major hate flame/making fun of me IF sm3.0 doesnt turn out to be great or if the 6600gt sucks at all future games on lowest settings.

BUT, don't bring in the 5xxx series into this...that is TOTALLY different.

If SM3.0 ends up being great with the 6xxx cards, i'll be happy for being the only broken record here!

There's no game coming out in the next 12 months, from what I've heard, that sounds like it will require more than a 6600GT....including Unreal3, AoEIII, or BF2. If it plays those games well, then it should be able to last you until the next gen refresh which should include DX10 compliant cards and you'll be looking at a REAL long term upgrade solution at that point.

If you like AA, get the XL. If you can do without it, get the GT. Benchmarks show them to be roughly equal price/performance buys at ~$300 and ~$180, respectively. The X800XL can certainly be double the performance due to its doubled memory bandwidth and memory size, and its almost-doubled fillrate. The key is AA, which will often put you over 128MB at 12x10. In these situations, the GT's framerates will stumble, and the XL's won't. But you can always either turn down the texture quality or simply omit AA to keep the GT running at top speed.

If you want the SM3 effects in the three games that currently tout them, then I guess you have only one choice. Just check out the framerates with those SM3 effects before you buy: Far Cry, Riddick, SC:CT. Having the option is better than not, and future games may not show as much of a performance hit, but--aside from SC:CT's small performance and supposedly noticable IQ gain--SM3 currently doesn't look like a must-have feature for the 6600GT.

Since X800XL is often 2x faster and is equal to 6800GT but costs $290 vs. $180 for 6600GT, I think it's a better value. You are getting double the performance in high resolutions for 1.5 times the price. If you dont use AA/AF settings and dont play at high resolutions, go with 6600GT.

Get the XL i had the chance to use my buddies in my rig while he was waiting for his PCIe and i liked it better than My 6600. I already have the 66 and it's a great card. I sold my X800 PRO when i moved from AGP to PCIe. I wish i would have bought the XL when CompUSA was selling it for 250. No matter what card you pick you'll be happy. I'm a big Counter Strike Source player and i play on 1024x768 4xAA every thing on high and it dose just fine. I have yet to see any lag in video, maybe ping wise but not video.

x700 / x600xt - 6600
x700pro / 9800pro - 6600gt
6800 - x800
6800GT - X800pro (and after a 8month refresh the cheaper X800XL on pci-e, the X800XL agp = still $350)

a) it's not double the price
b) it has double memory size, double memory bus, double the pipelines
c) in fact it has almost double the performance of the 6600GT
d) performance doesn't scale linearly to the price, especially not at the high end -
for example 6800Ultra costs 25% more than 6800GT but is only 10% faster.

Overall, given the price difference of less then $125, I personally would go for the X800XL since it offers a completely different performance level. But of course for peole who don't want to spend more than $200 on a video card, the 6600GT is by far the best value in this range, and offers very good performance which lets you enjoy most game with reasonably high details and resolution.
