Hey,

I'm in the process of building my new killer system but I just can't decide on the damned video card. I am currently going through "withdrawl" from being computerless for 2 weeks, the question is, should I just get the X800 Pro or wait it out for the XT. I mean the XT can't be MUCH better can it? Maybe 20-30% better?

If you had the cash but not the patience what would you get?

Pro or XT?

Someone please help me out before I go insane, thanks.

I would wait for XT. But it depends on your budget. If you want to save a $100 or $200, then definately get the X800.

As for me, Im satisfied with my Radeon 9800 Pro. :p

Wait for the XT or a 6800U, IMO, especially if you want to game at 16x12 AA+AF.

Or just grab the X800P on sale at BB ($360 + tax, yet back-ordered), and sell it in a few months (for not much less than you paid for it, probably) if you want more performance.

Appreciate the advice.

Atm my monitor's max res is only 12x10 and I doubt I'm going to buy a new one any time soon, I was actually thinking about getting a new one around Christmas time.

I'm guessing the XT outstages the Pro at higher res's ?

1280x1024 w/ 6xAA and 16xAF would be nice. :D Hell, turn TrueForm on too, does anyone ever use that?

I know what you mean though, as much as I love my LCD, AA just melts pixels together, it doesn't provide you with the actual higher detail that high resolution does.

Take a look at Anandtech's, TechReport's, NordicHardware's, FiringSquad's, and Digit-Life's X800 reviews for the answer. :) I'd concentrate on more modern games with lots of shaders for a better clue as to future performance (Far Cry being the most shader-heavy), but focus on the benchmarks of your favorite games (or at least of games in your preferred genres).

Gotta love LCD's, my parents bought me a 17" LG 786LS a few months back, its not that bad actually, but I've always wanted a regular 19" NEC for Counter-strike.

EDIT: Thanks for the advice Pete. Since my new system will be able to handle newer games I will probally experiment more with some of the newer FPS', ut2k4 looks pretty nice.

That Final Fantasy MMO would be very cool to explore (of course with all the settings to the max).

I would wait for the XT also unless you don't have the extra $100. That or you attempt to mod your Pro to a XT by enabling the extra pipes and flashing the Bios...

Can I assume you guys would also prefer the Ultra to the GT? I'm putting a new system together and trying to figure out which to get.

Well, I'd prefer the GT if I could overclock it to Ultra speeds. Saves me $100. Hardmod results of the x800pro -> XT shows approximately 20% performance gains. If this is going to be the same as a real retail XT, you decide. Wait a bit longer for 20% performance, or get an X800 now. Don't rule out the possibility of an Nvidia offering, too.

The XT outdoes the pro by more than the 20% price difference. Wait, pick up the Pro on sale, or go for the hardmod and get essentially the best card on the market for the cheapest price.

Buy the X800 PRO, pray to the volcano gods that it is moddable, and mod it to XT.

Here's a link : Link

Since you don't care for non cpu limited resolutions I would advice you to get the x800pro

The xtra bucks could be useful for a better cpu or ram
