I bought a copy of DOOM 3 and right now running on a GF4 TI 4400....(not very interesting). I'm looking for a new videocard but can't decide. I know Doom3 runs better on nvidia cards, but ATI card will run better on HL2...I've play the game for maybe about..45 min and I hope HL2 will be better than this.
Now, the big question..which card should I go with if I kinda want the best of both Open GL and D3D...i know either one will suffer some performance if its not running at their "natve" API, but which one will loose less performace? Lets jus assume I can overclock the GT to Ultra speed. Are X800 pro capable of ocing to PE speed or their differences is more than jus clock speed?

I would go with the 6800GT, it has 4 more pipelines than the x800, it support DirectX 9C, it has far superior performance in doom3, it even beets the x800XT in all the benchies in doom3.

both OpenGL and DirectX are standards that both ATI and nVidia follow.

The differance in the x800pro and x800XT are not just clockspeeds, the x800pro has 4 less pipelines than the x800XT, overclocking will not make it have more pipes.

its possible, very high success rate, the only differance is clock speeds

but ATI card will run better on HL2
that is unknown, the game is not finished yet.

Buying hardware based on how well it might overclock is foolish.

Agreed.

Also, all the cards are being manufactured from the same company, only brands are putting on different stickers on the HSF (some companies like Leadtek and Gainward offer there own custom heatsink).

I would choose based on price/warranty/bundle/availability.

eVGA: 1 year warranty, w/ FarCry. :)
PNY: Not sure, I've heard it was 3 year warranty, a change from there "Lifetime" (not a true lifetime, but only of the manufacturing cycle of the product) warranty. No software worthy of mentioning.
BFG: True Lifetime warranty, a big plus IMO w/ no software worthy of mentioning.

I myself got on the MSi 6800GT/Doom3 combo deal from Buy.com. Its not in stock yet, but hopefully it ships soon. Check HotDeals section for more info.

MSI = 3 year parts/2 year labor warranty, comes with XIII, Prince of Persia, and URU. Buy.com is packaging Doom3 with it as there own little bundle.

If I was in your situation, I'd choose between BFG and eVGA, which ever one is in stock and cheaper.

All the 6800GTs as of right now come off of the same assembly line, the only differance is the sticker.

Just because they all come off the same assembly line does not mean they all OC the same. My first BFG GT OC can barely reach 390/1050, and when it died 3 days later, I RMA'ed it back, and now my second GT OC can do 430/1150 with no problems.

think it is safe to say that the 6800GT is the better of the two cards tbh, ATI's cards seem more like speed bumps over their last generation becuase they are essentially still based off the R300 again....with a few added extras like sm2.0b and 3dc, i realize now if i was goin to buy ati, i am better off waiting for R500 as that seems to be a totally new design like nv40 was for nvidia.

ok ATI do dominate AA and AF, but ive never really used either eye candy, they also seem to do well in game test 4 on 3d mock 2003, but thats a synthetic bench, and when other SM2 games see ATI beating nvidia..does it really matter when both are pushing 100fps + anyway?

now u just got to find a 6800.....:p
x800pro seems alot easier to find (for me anyway)

I thought when you overcloked u void the warranty?

The X800pro and 6800GT are generally very close in performance. That recent xbit big roundup seems to have messed up several benches for the X800pro.

The GT seems a little faster overall in OGL, whereas the Pro seems a little faster in DX with AA/AF. I personally lean towards the Pro since the majority of games are DX.

I have benches from a recent review (July 28) ? xbit at the most probable resolution setting for the X800pro/6800GT ?1280x1024 - 4AA/8AF

... ? ... ... ... ... 6800GT ? ? X800pro

Farcry (2) ? ? ? ? 56 ? ? 61
Farcry (3) ? ? ? ? 51.4 ? ? 53.4

YEah technically you do... but everyone OC do you see us sh!tting our pants... no. Why? because they will never know. Unless you tell them they will NEVER know.

Oh yeah GT is better than Pro.

Also something screwy is happening inthose Xbit benches. Look at the Call Of duty benchmarks. You cant tell me by going from 1024x768 to 128x1024 drops the GT by 86 fps whereas only drops the Pro by 32. Something is definately wrong.
