X800 GT is out

The register released an article about the "quiet" release of the x800 GT, which will not be distributed by ATI, only 3rd parth manufacturers like GeCube.

I must say this is a POS card, 8 pipes and 475Mhz core? Granted the extra memory bandwidth and amount will definatly beat the 6600GT, but COMON this is so similar to the X800SE with an extra 50Mhz core and 133Mhz memory, which is such a minor improvement for a new card.

Unless this card is priced at $150 it seems fairly pointless.

I would agree with you on the x800gt, but if it's priced around $150 it is a nice alternative to some other cards out there.

I just read some other info on it, I would take it over a 6600GT anyday if I was in the market for that price range. The x800gt is going to be released at about $160-175 not too bad really.

Its crap for 2 reasons. People look at the 800GT and notice its crap then those people will go GT= Crap. Or People will see the 7800GT and 6800GT and think that GT= good and then have their GT(which is crap) for people to stupidly buy.

All this really does is screw with their naming sceme. XL XT XTPE Pro GT (not sure but do they have a SE this time?).

nvidia did the same thing with XT. they made their crappy 5900 card the 5900xt

Yeppers, This is when you know that competition is at its highest. Going sofar as to bastardizing the name sceme just to make the other one look worse. I am Happy with Nvidia current naming sceme though its easier to deal with. I absolutely hated the FX names though (performance to but thats obvious).

ATI: X800 -SE -GT -Pro -XL -XT -XTPE
NV: 6800 -GT -Ultra

I remember when ATI was just -SE -Pro -XT with the 9800 series.

I remember different, I recall several different 9800 cards, and some additional partner models (extreme, VIVO models). There were PAL AIW 9800SE, AIW 9800pro, 9800np and apparently 9800le(maybe these were those crap 128bit models?) Link
 
The X800 GT isn't crap; it's designed to roll with the 6600 GT, not the 6800 GT or the 7800 GT or whatever other card you're comparing it to without reason.

Check out this review. That review does a bunch of real-life comparisons, as opposed to The Register's "article".

I have to agree with you on that one. Trying to remember all the different iterations of the same series is getting downright confusing these days. Half of these cards aren't even available at local stores like Micro Center, Fry's and CompUSA, so you really have to stay on top of all the internet reviews.

Why would you need to remember anyway? When I go to buy a card, I determine my budget, look for cards in that budget...check reviews...buy card that offers the best value for my needs at that time. What difference does it make how many variations they are?

Obviously, the card turned out to be not a piece of crap, ATI sold all the chips out in short order, and they are available a decent pricepoint. Sounds good to me.
 
No, the X8000 GT is a new generation card it is suppose to up the standard, so it should have been better than the 6600GT and be at the same price point.

ATI had there chance to compete with the 6600GT with that POS x700 Pro, now it is time to release better cards at similare pricepoints, which the x800GT does NOT do which is why its crap.

Dont get me wrong the card is a good performer but thats not my point - next gen cards need to be faster not the same speed as previous gen cards.
 
seeing as not many people buy 500$ video cards till they drop in price, it was smart to bring something to take over the mid to low range. a card that craps ont he 6600gt and still costs the same, good in my books!!!

The X800GT is not a new generation card, its the same gen as 6600GT, its using up the cores that couldn't pass on higher end X800 cards. It offers very good performance at its pricepoint and appears to be a decent overclocker

Most reviews I've seen agree with this:
Much like NVIDIA's GeForce 7800 GT/GTX, you simply cannot buy a bad X800 GT 256MB card.

I still don't understand why ATI and nvidia have like 10 different naming schemes for each model series. Why can't they have 3 per series and the higher up in the series, the more powerful the card. A 6600GT should be significantly slower than a 6800 vanilla, not on par. It should be sequential, it really doesn't make sense for an 8500 to be faster than a 9000.

Probably because graphic cards are a cut-throat, constantly moving business like all tech, with marketing teams and shareholders.

High end chips have to be speed binned, if they didn't have a outlet for failed cores, guess how much performance would cost. If I can get an X800GT cheaper than a X700XT, guess what I'm going for. It keeps the highest end cheaper, and brings better performance to the lower end, and more economy to the entire line. I'd rather have more choices than less myself.

For guys like you it's easier, but for the average consumer its a big ole' headache.

edit: and for that matter, I'm loving the new onboard video realeased by ATI. It's a big step forward in the right direction, and a very nice cost savings for system builders. I'm looking forward to the day when powerful gaming-grade onboard video is standard.
