I dunno about paying $500 or even $600 for a vid card guys, call me old fashioned but I remember buying my Ti4200 brand spankin new for $250 when it was the coolest thing out there. I mean 4400s had been announced but that was it. I am looking at a new graphics card but is it really worth paying that much for the performance. I mean I want my games to run well and look cool but who REALLY notices a difference between 70 and 100 FPS in UT2K4

http://graphics.tomshardware.com/graphic/20040504/ati-x800-12.html#unreal_tournament_2004

I would notice a difference between 40 and 100FPS sure and I probably would notice a difference between 70 and 100 but when I can flash a 9800 pro 256 and be running an XT would I notice a $200-$300 difference??

Again in in Far Cry is 20-30FPS worth $200-$300 when I'm already getting close to 60FPS?

http://graphics.tomshardware.com/graphic/20040504/ati-x800-30.html

While I am certainly questioning performance I am also being serious. I play Counter Strike mostly and am REALLY looking foreward to Half-Life 2. I get about 60FPS in dual-monitor setting with my 4200 and I haven't OCd it at all. I could buy almost 2 9800pros for the price of the 6800UE and the x800 platinum. Is there really that big of a difference??

You're not turning on AA/AF which makes the game a whole lot less jagified..

If you crank the settings all the way up, there is a big difference. The only way that I'd play games like Doom3 would be if I could get all the atmosphere and visual quality that the developers intended. That is the reason that I would get a 6800 Ultra or X800XT PE.

For me, I wouldn't be getting my money's worth out of my games if I couldn't crank the effects up and have it be playable.

This is the great debate of all time for all products. Whats the point of getting a McLaren F1 if you can get a Lamborghini for much cheaper that offers reasonably close performance? Why get an uber home theater system with a 60" screen if you can see the same thing on a smaller and cheaper one? There will always be products that offer more bang for the buck than others, but those almost always will not offer the top performance.

it depends.

The 6800-gt is in the same position as your ti4200 - superb bang-4-buck . . . but this CPU is far more complex and EXpensive to produce and this is Now - 3 years later and it will probably cost you $100 more (likely, you'll get the GT for $350 or less on a lucky hot deal). ;)

i just got the ATI Radeon 9800Pro 256/256 for $223 shipped from NewEgg last month (i think it's $265 now) and FLASHED it into a genuine 9800-XT (thermal diode/overdrive enabled/etc).

i get ~16,600 points in 3DMArk01 and about 6,500 in '03. GOOD ENOUGH for ANY curent or near-future game . . . UNLESS you like 1600x1200 everything MAX and ON and High. Or need that high of a res because you have a demanding flat panel . . .

ME, i game at 1024x768 or 1152x864 with everything HIGH and ON and MAX . . . no real slowdowns - yet (not even DeuSex II).

For future games - 2-3 years off - who knows - and who really cares; by then the x800XT6800u will be ~$200 and the $700 new cards will be out. :p

only YOU can say 'worth it' - or not.

Bragging Rights . . . . Priceless
:D

Doom III/HL2 will run GREAT on the 9800Pro128MB . . . don't worry about that. These engines will NOT be LESS efficient than Unreal's for "older" cards.

well, the radeon 9800 pro costs $205 and the x800 pro costs $410ish, so its about double the price for double the performance if you think of it like that. to me, thats reasonable, but then again, i think the 9800 pro should be cheaper and the x800 pro be cheaper. i dont see how they can still keep the 9800xt price to price with the x800 xt.

btw, a 9800 XT is only a tad bit faster then the 9800 pro, so you wont see too big a difference.

The difference in performance was huge going from 9800Pro to an x800xt for me, but too be honest, I only had two games in which the boost in performance was actually necessary (FarCry and Halo). Everything else basically went from FAST to INSANELY FAST.

Basically, I'm gearing up for HL2 and D3.

What resolution do you normally game at?
(btw, really nice system; the link i posted only compares the 12-pipe x800pro, not the XTPE))

because of my 19" Samsung955df, my gaming res is 1024x768 or 1152x864 . . . for ME, an x800 would be unnecessary - now.

i think Doom III and HL2 will be LESS demanding than FarCry/DeuSex II/Halo. ;)

My normal res for gaming is 1280x960 (1280x1024 if the game permits) which approximates my desktop resolution. FSAA+Aniso is usually set at 4x FSAA, 8x Aniso.

You are an ideal candidate for the x800XT-PE . . . nice system!

At your resolutions, the X800xt runs away from the 9800XT (nevermind the 9800pro).

What did you pay for your XT-PE?

i missed 3 hot deals in a row and "settled" for a 9800xt for $223 . . . :p

Well, like a lot of people, I had the card on "pre-order" with Gateway and CDW even they both said that it was in-stock when I placed the order. After a lot of jerking around with both vendors, I was lucky enough to stumble across a thread over at Rage3D that mentioned that the Mesquite, TX CompUSA had them. Sure enough, they did so I scarfed one up. Had to pay the full MSRP of $499.95 plus shipping, but considering all the aggravation I had to go through with GW and CDW and considering the $700-800+ asking price for these cards on eBay, I thought it was real bargain. I've had it for just over two weeks now.

MSRP is a good "deal" - probably for the next couple of months. ;)

I went through the same crap you did with the same vendors. :p

That's why i took the "other route" and went with a 9800XT; after all, i UPgraded from a Radeon 8500 and i am "cheap" at heart (plus realized deep-down, my resolution is too low for the new cores . . . . this may change SOON as my Samsunbg is having problems with its off/on switch and i will get an LCD when it fails)

enjoy your new card.

:)
