X700XT worth the step-up?

I currently have the 256MB version of the Radeon 9800Pro, and I was wondering whether or not the X700XT would give me better performance. Now I've seen the benchmarks, and the X700XT was dead last behind even the 9600 in some, though it outperforms the 9800 by far in other applications. Now I have the opportunity to sell my 9800Pro for a decent price, and I was wondering what you think I should do.

I think the AGP version are due out a little later.

What I would do...sell the 9800pro for the "decent price" and get a 16 pipe card...either a moddable x800pro or the GT

I wouldn't step up. It depends on how often you like to upgrade your videocard I suppose. I usually go for a 1 year upgrade cycle, and I try to double my performance with each upgrade.

The 9800 Pro should still be a good card. If I was you, I'd probably hang onto it for a while longer. If you are dead set on selling it though, I'd go for a 6800 GT.

PCIe versions of the 6600GT and X700s are not available yet. 🙁

Ditto. The difference between going from a 9800XT to a 6800GT/X800PRO VIVO is much greater than going from a 9800XT to an X700XT/6600GT. I think you'd feel disappointed, especially as you have a fast CPU coupled with good memory.

yeah they crippled what may have been a good card again

128bit bus and only 128mb of memory.

if they rebadged a 9800 and updated it alittle with a lower fab process and gave it some gddr3 then i would be pretty happy

Not worth it, IMO. Besides, you probably wo't find an AGP X700XT anytime soon. If you want to switch to a card that draws less power and creates less heat, I'd consider selling your 9800P and buying the 6600GT when it comes out. It should even be a little faster in some shader-limited games like Far Cry.

Probably best to wait for benchmarks of a 6600GT and X700XT on a PCIe A64 MB before making the jump, though, as most benchmarks have compared the GT and XT on a PCIe Intel system with older cards on an AGP Intel/A64 system.

Thanks a lot guys, this was really helpful. If I'm able to find a good deal on a BFG 68000 OC then I'm going to sell my card for 200.

I was going to pass along my recently-bought 9800 pro to my wife (she could use the upgrade for SIMS2 to be pretty) and get a x700xt...but benchmarks have convinced me otherwise. Perhaps a 6600GT when it gets cheaper.

Get a 6600GT, it comes quite close to the X700XT and then when you need to upgrade again you always have the option of getting another one. BTW, what ever happend to the X800 SE?

That would be the X800SE, their rumored 6800NU competitor, which...

BTW, what ever happend to the X800 SE?

...has apparently vanished into the night. ATI hasn't said anything about it in a while, and neither has anyone else.

The x700 is barely any better then a 9800p. sometimes its better enough to notice, other times its worse. Overall, its slightly better of a card. Not worth the upgrade at all. It's like a 9600 to a 5700u in comparison to improvment. Or even a GF3 vanilla to an 8500.

If you really want to notice a difference go x800 pro or x800 XT. The x700 isnt THAT much better than the 9800. Its not worthit IMO.

There are too many cards out right now. 3 x700 cards, 3 x800 cards, 3 6800 cards, 2 6600 cards, all soon to be in both pcie and agp form. When will it end?

No kidding, I hate choice! Curse those video card companies, how dare they provide with an overarching array of options to suit various price ranges! STOP CONFUSING LORDTYRANUS YOU MANIACS!

😉

The x800se is out...as an OEM card from Dell. It's an 8 pipe card that seems to be in between a Radeon 9800 series card and a Geforce 6800.
