is performance about the same? i know there is no pure direct comparison (pcie and agp not on the same motherboard fully), but do these cards performa bout the same?

I don't know. I'd still rather have a VGA w/ 256 bit memory and 8 pixel pipes over one with 128 bit memory. Now the 6600GTs are out performing 5900NUs in newer benchmarks. How does the 6600GT AGP compare to the 9700pro?

Man......the fact that the 9700 Pro is still in this discussion is phenomenal.

Was a great card 🙂

Still is a great card. Doom 3 on high, 1280x1024, smooth and nice. I will upgrade in the next cycle, at this time there is no reason to upgrade. When I upgrade, this card will go into my second box, and keep chuggin along.

I had the x700pro for awhile and it is faster than the 9700pro. I don't have exact numbers other than 3dmark03. With my 9700pro I got around 4500-5000, with my x700pro I got 7500. In Half-Life 2 I could comfortably play at 1600x1200 with the x700pro, with the 9700pro I could only do 1280x1024. Keep in mind though that when I had the 9700pro my CPU was running at around 2.8ghz, with the x700pro my CPU was running at 3.4ghz.

If you're looking for a mid-range card, don't get an x700pro, get a 6600gt at the very least. It's faster in most games and about the same price.
