After a bit of dithering, and a post on here, decided afterall to get a bit more performance ( and time) out of my present system.
Have xp2600, 1gb ram, and 9700pro.
Play alot of BF2, and just want a bit more improvement on the graphics side of things. I don't have any desire to run at higher than 1280x1024.
Prices for the x700pro seem very reasonable, so does anyone know if it would be a worthwhile upgrade ?? Or the Nvidia cards of similar budget?
After my previous post, I had thought I'd just save the money for the next big upgrade, a whole new rig, rather than waste money on my old one.
BUT, I've figured that by extending the life of my present system by spending a small amount now, I'll be able to save money in the future when prices of the present top notch stuff has come down..
By the time I want to get a new rig, the money saved, compared to what it would cost now, would easily out weigh the small cost of an acceptable upgrade.

for BF2, you want NVIDIA, but the x700pro would be a considerable upgrade from the 9700 pro

I don't know how the X700 Pro performs on BF2, but, I ordered an X700 Pro from Tigerdirect cheap. But, I also ordered an Arctic Cooling VGA Silencer. I want to get a Geforce 8 next year so I don't want to spend too much on the video for now. :)

Slightly improved with more vertex units IIRC, but the 128-bit memory bus kills it. 6600GT is better for the money - 6800 even more so.

IN that case...you can wait for the X800GT which should be out now to within a few days...
the X800GT beats the 6600GT slightly by a few hundred points in 3D mark. The X700 pro lack power compared to 6600GT and yet the prices are much higher than 6600GT...however since the coming of X800GT which is aimed at 6600GT It will force the prices down on 6600GT therefore, I would either get 6600GT or X800GT but most likely X800GT as the chip uses the chip used on X850XTs but with only 8pp but I think maybe a few unlocking might do a 12pp...who knows...maybe

x700pros are around 105-120 in newegg, the 6600gt is at least 130, the card is about 10-15% faster, they seem comparable price/performance wise
