my motherboard is intel 975xbx2, CPU intel core 2 extreme 2.9ghz, Nvidia 8800gtx

the problem is I can't not bring down the temperature of my CPU. I even bought artic silver 5 for the heatsink...I cleaned the heatsink and cpu...tried a couple times with varied amount each time...it never helped or not noticeable.

the 2 cores stays at 45-57 degrees on idle but that is with the side case cover open...if I close that, the CPU temp kicks up to about 57 degrees. The reading is from speedfan.

another problem is that my 8800gtx idles at 76/77 degrees....seems way too hot for it to be doing nothing.

all this normally wouldn't be a problem but when I load a game or something else, the cpu fan goes nuts and very loud.

With my old 2000xp I used to leave my windows open, cold winter here in the uk got my temps down to 50c from 60c ish. You could try core temps or see what the bios says about temps, speed fan is known to be off now and then.

Most definitely go for an aftermarket cpu cooler. The fans are quiet and your temps will drop considerably.

Tuniq Tower 120 is an excellent cooler. Also, it sounds like you do not have good air flow in your case. Your 8800 is way too hot. Better case ventilation should help that considerably.

just make sure that ultra 120 will fit your mb and case, check the mfg website and take a couple measurements & do a google search for the mb & cooler

Tuniq tower is a good pick too, considerably cheaper and still performs very well. Of course, the thermalright is better, but both will do a superb job. I would only lap IHS and the HS when temps are not satisfactory after first installation.
