Brand new machine with a Core 2 x6800 2.93Ghz. nForce 680i mainboard. When I look up the speed it is showing 1.87Ghz (Sandra). I'm a noob so I don't know where to begin.

Thanks in advance...

you computer has C1E enabled, so as your computer is not doing anything it puts the cpu multiplier to 6x to save energy.

Great info, thanks. But the machine got clobbered in the CPU tests on 3DMARK06, does that make sense?

The processor's multiplier might just be set to a low value. Try manually setting the multiplier and disabling all speed-limiting features.
