x64 and Vista

Although I searched, I cannot find a thread explaining the differences between these 2 OSes. Yes they are both windows 64 bit but why did M$ make Vista if x64 already existed?

I'm trying to decode your question, but am honestly having problems. Your asking the difference between x64 and Vista which doesnt make sense. x64 is the platform (e.g. 64 bit or x86 aka 32bit) and the OS (e.g. Vista). So what is it your asking?

I'm having trouble figuring out what you are asking as well. Are you asking what the differences between Windows XP x64 Edition and Windows Vista x64 are?

I think that's the question....

For the op, Vista is a newer version of Windows than XP. It includes significant rewrites of code, DX10, enhanced security etc. Should find all the details you need on Microsoft's website.

the same reasons they made Vista 32 when xp 32 already exists (and the same reasons they made windows 98 when 95 already exists and 2000 when nt 4 already existed...)

well, i went to microsoft and here they compare xp to vista:

Althought the comparison is not directly made on M$'s site, it seems that vista is x64 + some extras-
1) aero interface, sidebar, gui goodies
2) additional firewall and some security additions
3) dx10 support and shader2.0 - but at the cost of stiffer hardware requirements

OTOH, it seems that x64 is more compatible with x32 apps (at least that's their marketing-speak)

I think you've gone and confused yourself. Your trying to compare 'x64' to Vista' x64 is a platform, it's the 64bit wintel platform. Your really asking, what is the difference between XP x64 and Vista x64. And the answer is, basically the same as the difference between XP and Vista.

Again, x64 is the platform, not the OS.

Not sure where you get that from, both XP64 and Vista64 have about the same base level of compatibility. However, since we are seeing drivers for Vista64 being delivered and Xp64 is now orphaned, Vista64 will be the most compatible from now on.

my mistake - i meant to say XP x64, and i was abbreviating that to x64. another reason i was never any good at lisp. kept making semantic errors. but yes that is what i meant.
