Yes there are mobos that support PCI-Express. I know the Intel 915/925 that uses the LGA775 has it.

if you are going to spend the money to upgrade to pci express then i wouldn't go with the X600
9800 pro all the way

There is no reason to believe the x600 will come anywhere near to 9800pro performance-wise...in fact at this point if you were to get the 225 x600 you would have been completely ripped off. The x600 will be the 5200 of the PCI-E world...cheap and low-end, slower than previous generation hardware. The x800SE will perform slightly above a 9800XT and the x800Pro/XT will be the same speed as their AGP counterparts. At this point anyone who splurged for PCI-E on their mobo would be a fool to have an x600 in it; if you spent that much on the board (and DDR-II as well) then you can afford an x800. An AGP based mobo + x800Pro will cost you as much as a PCI-E/DDR-II mobo + x600 in the end, and the x800Pro will mop the floor with the x600.

Let the rich boys be the ones who waste their money and early-adopt PCI-E...everyone else enjoy AGP for another year until PCI-E shows any improvement over an equivalent AGP card.

actaully it shouldn't be that bad of a card. the XT is clocked faster than a 9600XT and with all the shader intesive games coming clock speed on the card will make a huge difference more so than ram speed.

but I do agree the 9800 will smoke it regardless

oh so very true.

The X600 is just a 9600 Pro with PCI-E support. The 9800 Pro will kill it as it has 2x more pixel pipelines than the X600.

By Anandtech article on ATI X series lineup
" the X600 Pro will be a PCI Express version of the 9600 Pro with 400MHz core and 300MHz (600MHz data rate) memory clocks."

"Really, there isn't much to say about these parts, since the only difference is the bus interface."

This should be clear enough. :p

EDIT: Oops OP's linky is actually refering to the X600XT!. But then, $224 for a card that won't probably touch the perfomance of a 9700 Pro let alone a 9800 Pro, I consider it overpriced.

even the 9600xt didnt gain too much over the 9600 pro.......what 100mhz extra on the core and faster mem didnt yield the performance gains i would of thought............IIRC the 9500pro can still lay the smack down on even the 9600xt.........there is simply no substitue for pipelines

there is how ever a replacement for displacement.......its called a turbo!

I would think that the X300 series will be the new FX5200. Untill NV's low end cards come out anyway. :D

Lol LTC I forgot there was going to be an x300...that indeed will be teh suxor of the new gen. And as for nV I'll give them some credit for the fact that they just call their 5900 equivalent PCI-E card the PCX 5900...so people like the OP don't think it's some revolution of technology, just a different format. That's what made the 5200 such an insidious POS of a card...it confused good people into thinking it was better than the 4200 (bigger number = better, right? ).

This is exactly what will happen with the ATi PCI-E cards this time...people will go hmm the x300 is newer than the 9800pro, so it must be faster (and it's cheaper, what a steal!)...only to go home and realize they have been ripped off. But don't worry, I'm sure the x300 will have a 512 mb version to help hapless Best Buy customers think it is indeed hardcore, because everyone knows more means better...

x600 my foot, It doesn't matter if it's on PCI-X32!!! (I'm guessing thats after X-16 ;)) The 9800 Pro is a much better card, more pipelines, and stronger performance.

just get MSI RX9800 and overclock it to 9800xt speeds if you are looking into this price level.

Since x600xt is basically a 500/740 clocked 4x1 9600 xt with pci-express, and 9800pro is a 380/680 8x1 card, it will be faster in every game due to more pipes even with slower clock speeds.

So there is no chance that a "regular" x600 card will be faster than a 9800pro.

the x600 is basically a radeon 9600XT with slightly faster clockspeeds, it's still a 4 pipe card. It is horrendously overpriced now and a 9800 will kill it. 9800pro all the way!!

Slightly faster *memory* speed, but the core is still 500MHz, AFAIK.

I just got a semi-decent deal on a Dell (don't laugh :p ) where the only GPU option was an x300SE. Obviously I'm buying a Geforce 6800GT when a PCIe version is available, but I'm trying to figure out what exactly the x300 is.

At first I assumed it was another 8500/9000/9100/9200 card, but it looks like it's actually a Radeon 9600. It's 4 pipe, 2 shader chip that runs at 325mhz with 128-bit memory interface...exactly the same as a Radeon 9600.

So the x300se should be within spitting distance of my Geforce 4. Not super exciting, but it'll certainlly hold me over until I get something better.

and it also has a 64 bit memory bus....

The x300 has a 128-bit bus, se presumably 64-bit...but Dell's claiming their x300se is 128-bit. Either way, it'll be good enough until someone actually releases a PCIe Geforce 6800GT
