I'd wait until bulldozer. The Phenom II x6 are nice CPUs, but it is somewhat of a sideways step and is the reason why i've stuck with my Q9450 so long (i considered a 1090T when they were released). I'll be upgrading to SB.
at least wait for the AM3+ boards to come out. they're supposed to be backward compatible with AM3 phenoms. leaves you with more of a future.
Yeah but AM3+ will be around a lot longer when CPUs past bulldozer come out, but 1155 SB sockets probably wont be able to handle the next gen.The same goes for BD.
The problem for you is that there is no news for Bulldozer other than it requires AM3+ motherboards and it suppised to come out sometimes this year. Meanwhile LGA 1155 that comes out officially later this week, though you can buy online now, kicks the crap out of current AMD & Intel CPUs. The Core i5 2500k will wipe the floor with even the x6 Phenom IIs and is only around $200-$220 MSRP.
Why? SB is a whole new socket, which will be outdated by next year, doesnt it bother you that intel releases a new socket for almost every series of CPUs they release?
My goal is future upgrade-ability, and I don't like that SB is on a new socket.
I'm eager to try an AMD system because I've only had intel.

this is mostly true, but not entirely, the 775 has a lot of longevity. but of couse this 1156, 1155 business doesn't bode well for intel. trying to make everyone who just bought a 1156 buy again.
Everyone seems to be making the assumption that now that SB is released that everyone who purchased a 1156 is now going to be extremely unhappy with it's performance.
Even if you own a 1156 board and are jelouse of the gains offered by SB keep in mind it's still hard to find something which won't run extremely smoothly on an i5/i7 CPU.
Very few people that are going to upgrade to SB will have things they can reuse besides maybe GPU.Agreed. Lynnfield perform's VERY well and beats up on Amd. SB is faster but people shouldn't just ditch lynnfield for it.
Also SB is a cheap upgrade :
2500K - 220
Asps P67 EVO - 150
Reuse DDR3 memory
Reuse Video Card
Reuse Cooler

If your on 775 then i don't think you should have a problem with forking out for a new patform. It doesn't matter if you go 1155/1156/1366 you still need a new Mobo, CPU and Ram at a minimum.
However if you are the upgrade junkie and your coming from a 1156/1366 platform you can reuse everything exept your Motherboard and CPU as you will be on DDR3. Even users coming from a Phenom II platform can reuse everything exept the motherboard and CPU.
Im going to move from socket 775 to SB and i can reuse everythnig exept my CPU,Ram and Motherboard as i am currently on DDR2
Which is what i just said.
