X58 Versus 790G

Has anyone "thoroughly" tested X58 versus either P45 or 780G chipsets for performance in games when the settings and resolution is jacked way up? So far I have found one site and it didn't seem like it was legit. However, I also heard the rumor spread around this forum at some point in the past - That the AMD Platform scored up to 10% faster in games under those conditions. X58 is said to have some latency due to PCI-E --> QPI, or so I have read. However, I never thought the issue was more than a full frame per second. The results published on some german website showed some rather large differences, especially in minimum frame rates and my google searches are coming up rather sparse on the issue.

Does anyone have any links to benchmarks that substantiate these claims?

i have the impression that intel chipsets perform very well in those scenarios but have no real answer to your question. I'm curious now since i'm planing in getting a X58 board soon.

i just noticed something, you should have posted it in the Motherboard section

Honestly, I contemplated what forum it should go in. This question could go in CPU, Video or motherboard. CPU seemed the most fitting, because it is not a specific motherboard question, but rather, a chipset. Secondly, not many people visit the motherboard forum except for a specific motherboard question. My second option was going to post this in video since it is related to graphics performance.

I think the comparison you are looking for would be the 790FX with the sb750 (or maybe -710) which generally shows a 5% or so gain in benches (with multiple video cards) over the 790 'G'.

x58 - 2 x PCIe x16 @ x16x16
790FX - same

With the sb750 (and subsequent -710) AMD showed a marked improvement in I/O function. The rumahs on the internets have the upcoming sb800 building upon that improvement - sb800 may arrive in the next 60 days IF AMD delivers on their roadmap (which they have actually been doing the last 16 months or so).

Supposedly, sb800 may introduce PCIe Gen3 (not that it is really necessary) - which would be a small feather in their cap since it is an Intel standard.

More importantly, sb800 should be a leap forward in I/O for AMD versus ICH10 (and give you the option of another 157 USB connections  )

AMD has always given a bit more bandwidth to graphics than Intel. (well, at least recently) The difference with i7 should be minimal, but with the core 2's, a phenom platform could have a healthy lead in average and minimum framerates at settings that stressed the amount of graphics ram on the vid card. (lots of pci-e bus communication) That was probably more from the extra bandwidth of the AMD platform though, and less due to latency.
