So I'm running a X5670 on a P6T Deluxe V2 X58 board, and its failing Prime95. All settings in BIOS are set to AUTO.

This is not a brand new chip obviously, something I got off eBay. So I'm starting to wonder if the CPU is damaged or if running things in AUTO is the cause as P6T is not a server board.

What's the verdict? Do I need to dial in specific BIOS settings for the X5670? Or save myself the time call this chip a dud and move on?

Sorry forgot that critical detail. Temps are fine, I have a pretty good air cooler. 40 idle and 60 under 100% load in Prime95.

Prime95 can also fail due to incorrect memory timings/voltage. Also check CPU voltage.

Good point I was thinking to run Memtest86 separately, but according to CPU-Z my RAM timings and voltage are set to their spec, 9-9-9-24 v1.5 - everything in BIOS is set to auto.

RAM manufacturers usually only validate their RAM sticks on whichever is the most popular platform at the moment that the device is marketed and sold.

DDR3 has been used for a very long time and the exact timings and specifications possible to reach with each stick isn't guaranteed with each motherboard/processor combination.

Also make sure you are using the latest version of Prime95, as many versions have bugs that cause errors to pop up that are the fault of the program and not the hardware.

Up the voltage.. The P6T doesn't have adaptive voltage settings.

Thanks for pointing this out. Took me a bit to dial in all the settings. Running Prime95 to check for stability again..
