As you can see on Anands relesae article of new phenoms, AMD is not letting us build with X4 9650 @ all & only with the 125 watt version of the X4 9750,, what's the deal on this .. Anybody know why they'd cut us out .... Besides oem's using crappy boards & power supplys !!!
Seems not all the 790fx mothboards are willing to certify the 125 watt processors !!

By the way good article Gary !!!

Today's launch is actually much bigger than Phenom's original debut, encompassing a total of seven new processors:

Cores Stepping Clock Speed TDP L2 Cache L3 Cache 1 Ku Price
AMD Phenom X4 9850 4 B3 2.5GHz 125W 2MB 2MB $235
AMD Phenom X4 9750 4 B3 2.4GHz 125W 2MB 2MB $215
AMD Phenom X4 9750* 4 B3 2.4GHz 95W 2MB 2MB $???
AMD Phenom X4 9650* 4 B3 2.3GHz 95W 2MB 2MB $???
AMD Phenom X4 9550 4 B3 2.2GHz 95W 2MB 2MB $195
AMD Phenom X4 9100e* 4 B2 1.8GHz 65W 2MB 2MB ~$200
AMD Phenom X3 8600* 3 B2 2.3GHz 95W 1.5MB 2MB ~$175
AMD Phenom X3 8400* 3 B2 2.1GHz 95W 1.5MB 2MB ~$150

*Denotes OEM Only

Ok, let's see if we can make sense of this. There are three new CPUs that you'll see at places like Newegg: the Phenom X4 9850, Phenom X4 9750 and Phenom X4 9550 running at 2.5GHz, 2.4GHz and 2.2GHz respectively. The 50 at the end of the model number means that these CPUs are based on the new B3 stepping, which includes the fix for the TLB erratum - in other words, these are the CPUs you want. The prices are also pretty reasonable, they are all finally cheaper than Intel's Core 2 Quad Q6600.

Im sure the 9650 and 9750's will find their way to retail however if you are seeking a cheaper alternative to the 9850 BE then thats what the 9550 is for- in all likelihood the locked multiplier CPU's will all clock around the same. Additionally there are only 3 RD790FX boards (MSI, Asus and DFI) and all of them are working fine and certified for the 125watt 9850. The 'problems' with 125w support was with the cheaper 780G boards that have 4 phase analogue power.....these RD790 boards have a minimum of 8 phase digital power regulation- more than enough to handle 125w CPUs.

The threads indicative of the 790FX boards on XS have many users clocking 3ghz+ on the 9850s so there should be no confusion as to if they are 'supported' or not.

i got a really good chip, i'm @ 3.0 ghz but before that i was @2.9 on stock Vcore and 29c

i bet the 9550 can go high too, they really are working hard to put out good quads...

I guess maybe they are if you only shop Newegg and their inflated prices.

But walk into a Microcenter, or go online to MC's website, and you'll find Q6600's for $199.....all day, every day....all you want.

So, Phenoms are still hitting a brick wall with pricing....if you're going up against the Q6600. Now, if you're moving along to the newer Q9300's or better, then you have a point....but still have yet to see a Phenom OC by 1GHz over stock speeds, which is no problem so far for any Q6600 or their newer brothers, either.

Sylvanus, the way it stands now the 95 watt versions of X4 9650 & 9750 are going to oem's like hp, acer, gateway & the rest !
So it's not really the cost that i'm looking @, it's the 125 watt & the problems it causes with motherboards.. Also it's not just the smaller boards some of the 770 & 790x have smoked also !!
How about a X4 9750 Blacky with 95 watt !! Go AMD

Ol'Pal :D

ps; how does one know the power handling, [whetyer it's 4 phase or 8 phase] ??? does this show up in any specs ??

@ jessica = i'm sure we're all glad you like & enjoy your Q6600, but even a E8400 runs faster, overclocks better, & runs cooler than your Q6600 !!
We're just trying to be good li'l doobees & support AMD's effort against the dark side !!
