X4 620 or the X2 250?

Which is better for gaming and for future proof. If I get the X4 620, I will have 2GB RAM for the time being and can upgrade later. If I get the X2 250, I can get 4GB RAM now. I'm on a strict $200 budget 😛

Well, on the assumption that your mobo has four RAM slots, then the situation is this - if you purchase the X2 now, then to upgrade to the X4, you will have to discard the X2 somehow. But that's not true of the RAM, you could purchase 2GB now, and then another 2GB later, and you don't have to discard anything. So in the longer term, it would be more economical to get the X4 now, and 2GB of RAM, and then purchase another 2GB of RAM later on.
 
Makes sense Larry. I will be getting a single stick of 2GB RAM. Will I be able to get another stick of 2GB RAM at a later date? With the same timings and voltage, it should work right?

a single stick of ddr2 seems to choke my dual core A64 at work so i can only imagine how much running single channel would suffocate a quad core K10

i would really advise against single channel, but yes, it should work just fine.

The one I'm looking at is a DDR3. is that any different? I will get another DDR3 2GB down the road

I tested my friend's 785G mobo, and in single-channel mode, he scored 10,000 on 3DMark01. In dual-channel, he scored 10,500.

Not a huge difference between the two.
 
single vs dual channel isn't going to make a huge difference unless you are running only integrated video or are running same something really really memory intensive.
 
at newegg, you can get 4 gig (2x2 gig) for $96 shipped, and a 635 X4 for $100. Its only $9 more than the 620.
 
Well I am buying a motherboard too. For $60 an ASRock M3A77ODE. I think I have decided to go the quad-core route with 2GB RAM. I just wanted to run my setup by you guys just so that everything would fit.

I have an ATX CASE and the ASRock is a micro ATX, it should fit right?
After the upgrade it would be

X4 620 2.6GHz
ASRock M3A77ODE AM3
Crucial Ballistix 2GB 240-Pin DDR3 1333 (PC3 10600) [if I wanted another 2GB to put in my mobo at a later date, I just look at the timing and voltage right? in order to match my crucial]

Everything else looks good? I'd assume SATA II is backward compatible with a SATA I HDD. Hopefully a 500W PSU can power this
