x38 wolfdale support

Im looking into building a new system and I cannot seem to find an X38 chipset motherboard that is compatible with the Intel e8400 out of the box. I've read that most motherboards would require a bios update to use the e8400. Such as the Asus Maximus x38. Im needing a motherboard that supports the e8400 out of the box because I do not have any LGA 775 procs laying around to update the bios. I really would like to have an x38 chipset so i can have pci-e 2.0 and ddr3 support so i wont have to upgrade the mobo again in 6 months. Im getting a Geforce 9 series card with this system and id like to have the extra bandwidth that pci-e 2.0 has. Can any of you help point me in the right direction on what mobo to get? I dont want to spend the extra money for x48 and ddr3 right now, but i want to have a mobo that supports ddr3 in case i want to upgrade to it later on when the prices drop, thanks.

I believe that the abit IX38 QuadGT will run an E8400 on the shipping BIOS but you are best to update the BIOS to the latest.

AFAIK all X38 boards support Penryn-class processors out-of-the-box. You could almost claim that the X38 chipset was made for that purpose (as were the P35, Q33/35 and G33/35 chipsets). All Intel chipsets that officially support FSB1333 are natively Penryn-ready and several older chipsets (even the old i975X) support Penryn-class processors, albeit in overclocked state. As always, though, an update to the latest BIOS is recommended. 🙂

for what it's worth, I did not have any problems flashing my P5E mobo to a wolfdale-capable bios version. even though when I first started it up it said "unknown CPU" I was still able to flash it from the bios. I do not own any other lga775 cpus either.

I recommend you check out the mobo manufacturer 's forums and ask for help if you have a specific mobo in mind.
