I spent about 2 hours right now playing this game. I'm still lost on many aspects in this game. I got to a mission where i'm given a new ship, took me 15 minutes to figure out how to take it over. I feel like i was just thrown in the lions den without any help :(

I somewhat figured out the bartering, allthou i'm lost as how to make money asside from doing missions. I found a couple side missions which all are so far to transport people, unfortunately i can't do that since i'm missing some life support cargo thingy to hold people.

gah, any tips?

I just started over the weekend, and I think I'm pretty hooked (about 20 hours in). Yes it takes a long time to figure stuff out, and my usual tutorial places like gamefaqs have no information whatsoever. Try the egosoft forums, there's a lot of good stuff on there.

What are you wondering about?

Some specific information regarding the equipment. Do all the docking stations offer different hardware? Id like to get this life support cargo upgrade so i can do the transportation side quests. I'm noticing alot of rocks around that are selectable. I can't scan them yet as i don't have the right equipment. Can these rocks be mined for credits?

I hope you bought a hard copy of it, because if you bought it on Steam you have 4 installs left.

And yes, only game that comes to mind with a steeper learning curve is EvE Online.

For controls, load a game (tutorial or ingame as long as you don't save afterward) and scroll through the Options/Controls and test every feature you come across, making note of hard to remember ones. You then wade through the ingame menu.

For making money, quick/easy/fun way is to capture ships (mainly fighters and cargo ships). The pilots will randomly bail if you slowly wear them down, so don't use hard hitting weapons for this. The less damaged the ship the more it sells for. You can also salvage weapons or get a new ship for yourself. The chance of the pilot bailing is kinda random. -edit- I recall from X3 taking down the shields really fast increases the chance of them bailing, but not confirmed -edit-

Once you get enough money, you can:
A- Buy some cargo ships and mine asteroids (see the egosoft forums for detailed information such as where, what ship and what equipment/software).
B- Buy some cargo ships and use them for trading items. You buy software for the ship that lets it trade (buy low, sell high). The ship will "level" and be able to travel further for better deals. Once high enough you can equip it to warp/jump/whatever over huge distances and rake in cash.
-edit- For the two options above, you can set them to automatically do such tasks while you go off and do whatever you want -edit-
C- Buy a cargo ship and buy low/sell high yourself.

But most importantly, Read The Egosoft Forums for tips. On a secondary note, if you find yourself ready to leave your computer running all night while your ships trade, just cheat yourself some money rather then adding the monthly fee of a MMO to this single player MMO in electrical bills.

I forget such details. But not all stations carry the same stuff, and there is software you can buy that allows you to remote view a stations stock.

There's an excellent newbie guide to getting started in X3 somewhere out there. I'll look around tonight at home and see if I can find it again.

I have tried to start this series by playing x2 a couple times. The tutorial scenario breaks when I try it though so haven't managed to get very far.

What part of the X2 tutorial breaks for you?

I think I had that problem way back when I first bought the game. Is it that teh narrator's comments don't match up with what your suppose to do?

I've said this in some other threads and I still believe it to be true:

Play with a gamepad. You can control your ship pretty easily with one.
The only things I regularly use the keyboard for are

Tab/Shift Max accel(if you have it installed)/zero accel
T Target (sometimes I get too lazy to sit up and use the gamepad)
, . Universe/Sector map (quick way to get it)
F1-F5 for monitors
M,L Missle type/launch missle

I'm pretty sure that's it.

Im going to try X3 eventually but I still have so far to go in X2 (probably explored 40+ out of 130+ sectors).

I bought it this weekend also. I played it for about an hour then I saw that DoW2 was on sale and bought that. I'll get back to X3 eventually.

I get no sound, so I can't follow along as I have no idea what buttons to push. And by sound I mean I'm expecting there to be some voice telling me what to do.

No sound at all or just no voice?

Did you get all of the patches (including the no CD check one)?

You probably would've been better off starting with X3:The threat. TC makes quite a few things more difficult - notably xenon sectors, who can now utterly annihilate fighters thanks to their new weapon loadouts.

Dogfighting is a bit more difficult, but pretty much every other aspect of TC is easier for new players.

Back in X2, they stuck you with a minimally fitted discoverer in the beginning!:disgust:

But it only takes a couple of solid trade runs to max it out (once you have the Mercury).

To get started I would (hope I don't leave anything out; I'm still on my first game so I've only done the beginning once):

get comfortable using the SETI. If you use a game pad it's button 10, or J on the keyboard

max out the discoverer (especially speed) as quickly as you can. Making sure you have the maximum allowable 3 x 1 MW shield is a good idea

follow the main plot until you get the Mercury

buy whatever speed you can for the Mercury at that point, and don't forget to buy the shield for it in case you bump something (repairing a ship is expensive). Also: buy the trade extension software - you'll definitely need it

start doing trade runs, especially for Energy/Argnu Beef. The Hole is a great place to find good ones right away; in any case you won't have to leave Argon space

COMPLETELY max out the speed on the Mercury as soon as you have the $. Rudder optimisation helps as well.

And - very important - do not forget to buy some missles for the discoverer before you head for Brennan's Triumph as part of the main plot. The game doesn't explain that very well, if at all.

You should have a couple hundred grand in no time if you use the SETI and have the Mercury maxed out.

I've heard rumblings of issues with DRM on this, anybody care to comment? I picked up X3 Reunion when they removed the DRM with the 2.0 patch IIRC. I'd like to do the same with X3 TC if they have removed the TAGES...

To my knowledge it's still not patched out yet. And if you bought the Steam version like myself, I'm not even sure if that will affect it.

In any case to the OP; the game is extremely complicated from the get go so don't feel bad not getting the hang of things right away. If you REALLY want to make EASY and quick money, then get a fast M4 ship (if you don't already have one) and start exploring the galaxy looking for derelict ships. These ships are scattered around the universe and are basically FREE ships.

There are plenty of online maps / guides to let you know which sectors have free ships in them just laying about. It will kick start your armada / funding process by doing this and you can get into that M3 to start really enjoying the game. (There's even one free Boron M3 laying around for you, although it's not the greatest) I know this isn't the "purist" way of starting off, but it's in no way cheating and you already are looking at guides and player advice which I assume means you are open to general freebies.

Once you get some money in your name, making trade stations / complexes will consume your entire X3 gaming life. They will also be used to support your growing Armada of ships since you will eventually be making missile fleets, which can downright destroy anything and anyone eventually.

Without looking up the exact locations of the derelict ships on the nets, how would one find one of these ships? Would you find them just by randomly exploring? That seems like it would take years to actually find one without looking up the location.

Pretty much randomly, yeah.

And people still trade in x3:TC? I thought the balance changes had been so severe as to make trading pointless.

Trading is just as profitable as it was in Reunion, it's just that combat missions pay out much more now. Ultimately, a trade empire is still going to passively generate wealth for you, while the missions only make money while you spend time doing them. At higher combat ranks, I can make a few million per mission easily. At the same time, the AI is a little tougher with the new weapons and there is more reason to "go wider" and use wingmen and fleets. The missions are lucrative enough that you can afford to lose a fighter every now and then and still make a profit.

I've pretty much sunk all my extra credits generated from missions into stations for the last few months, and I have 3 mega-complexes with several hundred stations total that generate all my armaments and consumables. When I need a lot of cash, I just sell off some surplus at the nearest equipment dock for a few hundred million.
