This may be changing. With the 8 series cards NV no longer supports XvMC (X video motion compensation), so no more hardware accelerated mpeg2 playback with newer NV cards.

Meanwhile ATI is slowly plugging along. They've never had mpeg acceleration with their cards under Linux (NV has had it pretty much from the geforce4 era until today), but who knows. They haven't announced stopping Linux support for their new cards either.
